Methanol-Fueled Chem Tanker Delivered to NYK

Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Group) has taken delivery of Takaroa Sun, a methanol carrier equipped with two-stroke dual-fuel engine tech that allows the vessel to be powered by methanol. Built in South Korea at Hyundai MIPO Dockyard, the new ship was funded through NYK’s green financing initiative established to support environment-friendly projects.Takaroa Sun was built with the MAN Energy Solutions second-generation B&W ME-LGIM two-stroke dual-fuel engine that runs on both methanol and conventional marine fuel.

Delft Technology Students Visits NYK

Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) held a naming ceremony at its Sakaide shipyard for the new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier owned jointly by NYK Line and JERA.The ceremony was attended by Hendrik Gordenker, chairman of JERA Co. Inc.; Yasumi Kudo, chairman of NYK; and a number of related parties.At the ceremony, the ship was named “Shinshu Maru” by Mr. Gordenker and the ceremonial rope holding the vessel in place was cut by his wife. NYK Develops Advance Water-in-Oil Alarm to Prevent Engine Trouble

NYK Develops Onboard Sulfur-in-oil Analyzer

NYK and Nippon Yuka Kogyo Co., Ltd., an NYK Group company, have teamed with Horiba Ltd. to develop a new sulfur-in-oil analyzer for ships. MT-FAST Fuel-saving Device Installed on 500 Vessels

MT-FAST, a fuel-saving device jointly developed by NYK Group company MTI Co. Ltd. and Tsuneishi Holdings Corporation, has now been installed on over 500 vessels. Operational data has proven the device to be effective in saving fuel.MT-FAST is a multi-blade device that can be attached to a ship’s hull to improve the propeller's propulsion efficiency.A ship moves forward when the engine rotates the propeller, which sucks in the water in front of it and propels that water backwards, creating the force that pushes the vessel forward.

New Japanese-built LNG Carrier Named

A naming ceremony was held for a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, Diamond Gas Orchid, at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd.’s Nagasaki Shipyard.The newbuild, owned by Diamond LNG Shipping 1 Pte. Ltd., a 50/50 joint venture company between NYK and Mitsubishi Corporation (MC), will sail under a long-term time-charter contract with MC’s wholly owned subsidiary in Singapore, Diamond Gas International Pte. Ltd.After delivery on June 29, 2018, the ship will transport LNG from Louisiana in the U.S.

NYK's Diagnostic Tool to Prevent Machinery Failure

NYK and MTI Co. Ltd. have jointly developed a diagnostic tool that records, visualizes, and analyzes the operational sounds of a vessel’s engine plant. The tool is one of the group’s big data initiatives to encourage greater safety and has been given the name "Kirari MUSE." Onboard trials will begin shortly. Four Methanol-fueled Vessels Ordered in Korea

Four new vessels powered by methanol fuel will be built in Korea following investment from maritime industry stakeholders Waterfront Shipping Company Ltd. (WFS), Marinvest/Skagerack Invest (Marinvest), IINO Kaiun Kaisha, Ltd. (IINO), Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (Mitsui) and the NYK Group (NYK). The four 49,000 dead weight tonne newbuilds will be built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard for delivery in 2019. They will be powered by MAN B&W ME-LGI two-stroke dual-fuel engines that can run on methanol, fuel oil, marine diesel oil or gas oil.

Wärtsilä Scrubbers for New Japanese Bulk Carriers

Wärtsilä informs it has been contracted to supply exhaust gas cleaning systems for two new 56,000 DWT Handymax bulk carriers being built at Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in Japan for Tokyo based NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd. (NYK BP). The newbuilds will be the first vessels owned or chartered by NYK Group having exhaust gas cleaning systems installed. By fitting the scrubber systems, the ships will be compliant with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) SOx emissions regulations, which come into force in 2020.

Award for Japan's First LNG-fueled Tugboat

NYK Line received award sponsored by the Japan Federation of Freight Industries (JFFI) recognizing the environmental load reduction achieved by Japan's first LNG-fueled tugboat, Sakigake. This is the third time since 2009 that NYK has been honored at this annual awards ceremony. The Japanese Government's 'Minister's Award' has been presented jointly to NYK and the  Oshima Shipbuilding Co. in recognition of the NYK Group’s use of the energy-saving air-lubrication system on its vessels. The awards ceremony was held in Tokyo at Eco-Products 2013, the largest environmental exhibition in Japan, and attended by NYK managing corporate officer Yasuo Tanaka; Iwashita Tatsurou, director and general manager of the Design Dept. at Oshima Shipbuilding; and Makoto Igarashi, president of MTI.

NYK Gets Japan's First LNG-Fuelled Tug

NYK Line has taken delivery of Japan’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled tugboat from Keihin Dock. "The new tug, named Sakigake, was delivered by Keihin Dock Co. Ltd and is expected confirm the viability of LNG as a marine fuel and to help cultivate a new business field in the area of LNG as an environment-friendly marine fuel,” says NYK. Sakigake has been chartered to Wing Maritime Service Corporation from NYK, and will be operated mainly at the ports of Yokohama and Kawasaki.
