Reducing Lubrication Oil Consumption

When operating in emission control areas, marine vessels are restricted to reduce the Sulphur content in fuel. The Blending-on-Board system from Maersk Fluid Technology A/S can blend the cylinder oil for all levels of fuel sulphur, while reducing the total lubrication oil consumption by up to 40 percent a year. With this solution, the Danish company has secured an order from China COSCO Shipping Group. “Partly on cylinder oil optimization and partly due to recycling, the Blending-on-Board system enables vessels to save up to 40 percent of the total lube oil consumption.

COSCO: 10 Vessels with Hans Jensen Lubrication System

One of the world’s biggest shipping companies, China COSCO Shipping Group, has placed an order for 10 large ore carriers from China State Shipbuilding Corporation. COSCO specified the order to include the cylinder lubrication system ‘HJ Lubtronic SIP’ from Hans Jensen Lubricators A/S, as it enables large cost savings through reduced cylinder oil consumption, and reduced wear on cylinder liners and piston rings. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in January 2018. Today’s energy efficient diesel engines for marine vessels are designed to reduce environmental footprints and fuel costs.

Shell Marine Launches New Cylinder Oil

Shell Marine has launched a new two-stroke engine cylinder oil, Shell Alexia 140, now available from the ports of Rotterdam, Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Antwerp, Tanjung Pelepas, Busan and Salalah. The launch follows receipt of a No Objection Letter (NOL) for commercial use of Shell Alexia 140 from MAN Diesel & Turbo and coincides with Shell Alexia 140’s acceptance into full scale operations by two major customers. In September 2016, Shell Marine disclosed Alexia 140’s selection as the first test oil for ‘ACOM’ - MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Automated Cylinder Oil Mixing process.

Parker Kittiwake Launches ATR Analyzer

Parker Kittiwake launched the Parker Kittiwake Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) analyzer, which the company says represents a breakthrough for the simultaneous testing of base number (BN), total acid number (TAN), insolubles, soot loading, viscosity, FAME and water content of oil samples on board a ship, allowing all parameters to be measured using a single sample in one test kit. The ATR analyzer uses infrared spectroscopy to determine the presence of damaging elements such as solid particles or water in a representative sample of oil.

Lubricants Manufacturer Exol Eyes Maritime Markets

A new worldwide distributor deal signed between Yorkshire-based maritime diesel engine specialist Maktec Marine and Midlands headquartered lubricant giant Exol aims to catapult the U.K. lubricants manufacturer into the maritime industry. “Exol is a sleeping giant in the maritime sector,” said Mark Cornforth, owner of Maktec, a brand with 20 years of maritime industry experience. “Exol is flourishing in the industrial, automotive, agriculture and transport sectors but wants to ramp up activity in the shipping industry, which is Maktec’s specialist area.

New Passenger Ferry for Seychelles’ Inter Island Express

A new 30-meter aluminum passenger ferry Isle of la Digue built by Richardson Devine Marine is the latest vessel designed by Incat Crowther for the Seychelles operator Inter Island Express. The catamaran newbuild, which required a very shallow draft to afford access to the operator’s confined harbor berth, is the first to feature Incat Crowther’s new generation propeller tunnel to reduce propeller draft and offer a flat transom which can integrate with standard fixed or active interceptor systems, the designer said.

Type Approval for Uprated MAN L51/60DF

MAN Diesel & Turbo said its dual-fuel MAN L51/60DF engine has passed its Type Approval Test (TAT), which ran from October 17 to 20 at the company’s Augsburg works in Germany, in front of the industry’s main classification societies. The nine-cylinder test engine has an output of 1,150 kW/cylinder at a nominal speed of 500/514 rpm. The MAN L51/60DF engine can be employed both as marine main-engine and auxiliary engine. Augsburg’s testbed no. 20 hosted the test program of a nine-cylinder version of the engine that ran on fuel oil (DMA) and natural gas.

The Oil Mist Eliminator captures & coalesces lube oil mist, and returns it back to the oil tank for re-use. The company explains that installing an Oil Mist Eliminator on turbines and compressors has numerous advantages to ongoing site operation. Subjecting lubrication oil to high temperature and high-speed mechanical forces in the lube oil tank creates oil mist which would otherwise be vented to atmosphere. Oils and Oil Analysis: What You Need to Know

In any given lubricant (such as engine oil, transmission fluid or gear oil), there are three main factors that influence the “useful life” of the lubricant:  Viscosity Stability, Oxidation, and Contamination. While it is important to understand how these factors affect oil life, it is equally important to realize that none of these factors can be measured or monitored except through a thorough and ongoing oil analysis program. Viscosity - First, let’s examine the oil property known as “Viscosity.”  Viscosity is defined as resistance of an oil to flow at a given temperature.

Cleaner Maritime Air for North America Comes Soon

On the operative day the sulfur content of the fuel oil used on board ships operating within the ECA may not exceed 1.00 percent m/m (10,000 ppm). The boundaries of the North American ECA are defined in IMO MEPC.1/Circ.723 . The US EPA has issued Interim Guidance on the Non-Availability of Compliant Fuel Oil for the North American ECA and more information is also available on the US EPA website.

The STAUFFMini Water Vacpurifies hydraulic system oil, eliminating water, gas and particulate matter. The purified oil satisfies the most stringent quality requirements. The STAUFFMini Water Vac dehydrates and cleans most types of oils such as lubricating, hydraulic, transformer and switch oils while it neither removes nor alters oil additives. The water removal process is based on pure vacuum evaporation inside a vacuum chamber at a maximum temperature of +65 °C / +149 °F. Ships 'Unseaworthy' If They Don't Meet Emissions Rules -IMO

Ships which do not meet cuts to the amount of sulphur they can burn in their engines risk being declared "unseaworthy", the International Maritime Organization (IMO) said on Thursday. Shippers and refiner are not sure how they will comply with rules finalized last year which require ships worldwide to cut sulphur emissions from 3.5 to 0.5 percent by 2020. The IMO said there would be no delays or exceptions to the coming rules, whether or not the industry takes the steps it needs to comply, and warned that all parties face consequences if they do not play their part.
