Volvo Penta's Next Gen Propulsion Packages

With over 100,000 units produced, the Volvo Penta D4 and D6 marine propulsion packages get a comprehensive helm-to-prop update, delivering more power and reliability, while operating costs are cut by a third. The updates includes newly designed engines, a completely new aquamatic sterndrive, updated IPS drive and an upgraded Electronic Vessel Control System.With over 100,000 units delivered since its introduction in 2003, Volvo Penta has given its next generation D4 & D6 propulsion packages a comprehensive overhaul.

Crowley Christens LNG ConRo El Coquí

Crowley Maritime Corp. on Saturday christened its Commitment Class combination container/roll on-roll off (ConRo) ship El Coquí, which is among the first of its kind to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).The Jones Act compliant vessel is the first of two built as part of Crowley’s Commitment Class project and a key new component in the company’s supply chain transformation in the U.S. mainland-Puerto Rico trade. Sister ship Taíno is in the final phases of construction and testing at VT Halter Marine’s shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss.

MHI Seeks to Integrate Marine Diesel Engine Businesses

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), its wholly owned subsidiary Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Engine Co., Ltd. (MHI-MME), and Kobe Diesel Co., Ltd. have concluded a basic agreement to pursue integration of the marine diesel engine operations of MHI-MME and Kobe Diesel. Based on this, the three parties will seek to reach agreement on the terms of the integration by a target date of late December. This will be followed by the signing of the final agreement by early February, 2017.

Marine Noise Emissions: Is it Your Next Regulatory and Environmental Hurdle?

A different kind of emission in the compliance spotlight – above and below decks. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Equipment during its 2012, 56th session submitted a draft revised code on noise levels onboard ships. The code set out mandatory noise level limits for machinery spaces, control rooms, workshops, cargo blocks and accommodation spaces in an effort to address health and safety issues on board ships, ATB’s and/or tugboats.

Norwegian Electric Systems (NES) is to supply Gulf Marine Services’ latest E-Class vessel 'GMS Enterprise' with a new state-of-the-art diesel electric propulsion system. Details are explained by Paul Winson, Vice President Sales at NES. Gulf Marine Services (GMS) is the largest provider of self-propelled self-elevating jackup barges in the world. The rigs are highly versatile and support the offshore oil and gas industry as well as the offshore wind industry. The vessel will be outfitted at GMS’ own yard in Abu Dhabi, UAE. GMS Enterprise will operate using the world leading Quadro Drive® VFD.
