In late June, NYK supplied biodiesel fuel at Kinuura port (Aichi Prefecture) to the wood-chip carrier Daio Austral, which transports wood chips for Daio Paper Corporation. This was the first oceangoing vessel operated by NYK to receive biodiesel fuel in Japan. Japanese shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd., (“K” Line) has delivered the Tohoku Maru, a 91,000 DWT-type special coal carrier at Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.Tohoku Maru is same type as “K” Line’s specialized fleet for transport of thermal coal known as the “Corona-series”. The “Corona-series” consists of epoch-making coal carriers equipped with wide beam and shallow draft, which are said to be the most suitable type to enter ports of Japanese Thermal Power Stations to discharge cargo.Tohoku Maru is equipped with Advanced Flipper Fins and Rudder Fin which promote her propeller efficiency.
Wärtsilä Scrubbers for New Japanese Bulk Carriers
Wärtsilä informs it has been contracted to supply exhaust gas cleaning systems for two new 56,000 DWT Handymax bulk carriers being built at Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in Japan for Tokyo based NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd. (NYK BP). The newbuilds will be the first vessels owned or chartered by NYK Group having exhaust gas cleaning systems installed. By fitting the scrubber systems, the ships will be compliant with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) SOx emissions regulations, which come into force in 2020.

Aiming to Meet the IMO's Tier III NOx Emission Controls Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., Akasaka Diesels Limited, and Sakai Chemical Industry Co., Ltd are to begin shipboard tests of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) nitrogen oxide (NOx) removal equipment installed on NYK Line's new bulk coal carrier Initial Salute, which was built by Oshima Shipbuilding.
