Wärtsilä announced on Monday it has won a contract to supply 40 generating sets for 12 new liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueled platform supply vessels (PSV), the first such vessels to be built for a Chinese owner. ABS Supports Ballast Water Compliance

American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), a global provider of classification and technical advisory services to the marine and offshore industries, published its 2019 Ballast Water Management Advisory providing critical advice to owners in advance of the five-year window beginning September 2019, requiring retrofits of BWM systems on existing ships.“We anticipate roughly 6,000 vessels per year over the next five years will need to be retrofitted with ballast water management systems to meet the revised IMO compliance dates…

Fincantieri Cuts First Steel for Windstar

Today at Fincantieri’s Arsenale Triestino San Marco shipyard, in Trieste, Italy, first steel was cut for the first of three new ships sections as part of Windstar Cruises’s $250 million vessel overhaul program.Windstar’s Star Plus Initiative is a complex and comprehensive small ship lengthening, engine replacement and renovation project that will see the owner renovate half of its fleet in succession. Star Breeze, Star Legend and Star Pride will be cut in half to allow the installation of a new stepped mid-body section that will lengthen each vessel by approximately 25 meters.

MAN to Power Canada's Joint Support Ships

Canadian shipbuilder Seaspan Shipyards announced Tuesday it has awarded MAN Energy Solutions Canada of Vancouver, BC, a contract valued at $55 million ($41.2 million US) to provide propulsion and power generation components for Canada’s new Joint Support Ships (JSS).The contract was announced today but was awarded and signed late last year, a Seaspan Shipyards spokesperson confirmed to MarineLink.MAN will provide two MAN 12V32/44CR (Common Rail) propulsion engines equipped with environmental protection SCR technology…

Wärtsilä Power for Two New Tug Boats

The engines and steerable thrusters supplied by Wärtsilä are delivering for a pair of two new tug boats operated by the Turkish Directorate General of Coastal Safety. Following sea trials, the first vessel is already in operation, while the second will enter service in April 2019. The vessels were built in Eregli under project management by the Yutek shipyard and site team, and the orders with Wärtsilä were booked in 2017.The bollard pull rating for the tug boats has been certified by the Turkish Lloyd classification society as being 75 TBP.

Damen Completes Refit of Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth

Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth has left Damen Shiprepair Brest (DSBr) following a 12-day repair and refit program. She is the most recent addition to the Cunard fleet, having been delivered in 2010.The program was highly intensive with a series of major systems being overhauled or installed. Canadian operator Société des traversiers du Québec (STQ) has taken delivery of MV Armand-Imbeau II, a new environmentally friendly, 92-meter-long ferry built by Chantier Davie Canada.The new vessel will operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel, enabling STQ - Québec Province ferries operator - to minimize the environmental impact of its operations. Suddenly, with the deadline now little more than one year away, the countdown clock will very soon be ticking much louder. Simply stated, the cap on allowable sulfur content in marine fuels, presently at 3.5 percent in many geographical regions, will be reduced to 0.5 percent in January 2020. Siemens to Build Wärtsilä Marine Gear Boxes

Wärtsilä and Flender (Siemens AG, Mechanical Drives) have reached an agreement that will transfer the assembly and testing of Wärtsilä's marine gear box portfolio to the Siemens Mechanical Drives facilities in Voerde, Germany. In announcing the deal, Wärtsilä said the new arrangement takes advantage of synergies with processes developed at the Siemens plant to secure the quality and delivery punctuality of the gear boxes, thus providing greater customer value. Kongsberg Wins EPCI Contract for LNG-fueled RoPax Ferry Newbuild

Kongsberg Maritime said it has been awarded an Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation (EPCI) contract with Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG), a subsidiary of Siem Group. This is the second RoPax contract that Kongsberg Maritime has been awarded at FSG. The ‘Full Picture’ contract, valued at approximately €20 million ($23 million), covers engineering, procurement and project management, maritime technology deliveries and installation on a LNG fuelled RoPax Ferry for French company Brittany Ferries Ltd.

Wärtsilä Scrubbers for New Japanese Bulk Carriers

Wärtsilä informs it has been contracted to supply exhaust gas cleaning systems for two new 56,000 DWT Handymax bulk carriers being built at Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in Japan for Tokyo based NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd. (NYK BP). The newbuilds will be the first vessels owned or chartered by NYK Group having exhaust gas cleaning systems installed. By fitting the scrubber systems, the ships will be compliant with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) SOx emissions regulations, which come into force in 2020.

Wärtsilä to Power LNG Offshore Construction Vessel

Wärtsilä is to supply the engines and other propulsion machinery for a new offshore construction vessel being built at the Cosco shipyard in China. The ship owner is Belgian operator Dredging International (DEME). This will be the first vessel of its kind to be fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and in addition to the dual-fuel engines, Wärtsilä will also provide its LNGPac fuel storage and supply system and propulsion systems. The orders with Wärtsilä were booked in the fourth quarter of 2016 and in February 2017.

Dual-fuel Solution to Drive World's Mightiest Cutter Dredger

Wärtsilä said it has been contracted to supply a comprehensive package of engines and propulsion machinery for a new cutter suction dredger (CSD) vessel slated to become the world's most powerful and first ever to be fuelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The newbuild, Spartacus, is being built at the Royal IHC yard in the Netherlands on behalf of Belgium based Dredging International (DEME). The order with Wärtsilä, worth around $21 million, was booked in the fourth quarter of 2016. The 164-meter-long vessel will have a total installed power of 44,180 kW.

Case Study: 18-day Exhaust Gas Scrubber Install

Goltens was contracted by a large cruise vessel owner to undertake the installation of two exhaust gas scrubbers on one of its ships to comply with sulfur emissions regulations. The vessel is powered by four GMT/Sulzer 16ZAV40S and two GMT/Sulzer 12ZAV40S diesel electric generating sets. The project involved the evaluation, planning, design and installation of two 10+ meter long exhaust gas scrubber towers on Diesel Generators #1 and #2 with a deadline to complete the operation before the end of the vessel’s dry dock period in a U.S. port.

CSSC, Wärtsilä Form Electrical & Automation Joint Venture

Technology group Wärtsilä and China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) have signed a new joint venture company agreement. The new joint venture, to be known as CSSC Wärtsilä Electrical & Automation Co Ltd (CWE&A), will focus on the growing Chinese electrical and automation (E&A) market, especially for high-tech ship applications. The joint venture company is expected to be fully operational before the middle of 2017. China is a growing market within the high-tech ships segment, and Chinese yards are increasingly active in newbuild projects for high-tech and high-added value ships.
