Finland Ferries Standardizes with SCHOTTEL
The SCHOTTEL After Sales Team has carried out a modernization on two double-ended ferries operated by FinFerries. Both vessels, capable of holding either 14 cars or up to 60 tons of payload, were originally equipped with various propeller systems manufactured in different years. For the retrofit, the state-owned operator requested a tailor-made concept to allow the same propeller assembly to be used. At the same time, the solution had to be quick and easy to install.In each ferry, two SCHOTTEL Rudderpropellers type SRP 150 have been installed.
Seaspan Opts for SCHOTTEL Again
SCHOTTEL has been chosen as propulsion supplier for two new build Ro-Ro ferries under construction at Damen Shipyards Mangalia, Romania. Each of the vessels ordered by Canadian Seaspan Ferries Corporation will be propelled by two SCHOTTEL Combi Drives and two SCHOTTEL Transverse Thrusters. SCHOTTEL Secures NC Ferries Contract
SCHOTTEL said it has secured a contract to provide propulsion units for two new vehicle ferries ordered by North Carolina’s Department of Transportation, which operates the second largest state-run ferry system in the United States. Voith Delivers First U.S.-Built VSP Units
The first two American-made Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP) units have been delivered and installed in the Rodanthe ferry.Rodanthe is a ferry to be operated by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and used in its service to the Outer Banks, a string of barrier islands between North Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean.“With the new VSP units installed, the Rodanthe will offer years of smooth, efficient service to the islands. New IMR Vessel for Otto Candies
A new US-flagged inspection, maintenance and repair (IMR) vessel leverages three different propulsion systems for improved maneuverability and a high free running speed.The IMR vessel Paul Candies, built in 2018 by Louisiana builder Candies Shipbuilders and owned by its parent company Otto Candies, is equipped with two Combi Drives, two transverse thrusters and one retractable rudderpropeller from manufacturer SCHOTTEL.Due to two type SCD 560 STP SCHOTTEL Combi Drive azimuth thrusters the diesel-electric vessel reaches a top speed of 14 knots.
Wartsila Propulsion System for New NMDC's Dredger
Wärtsilä supplied the full propulsion package for National Marine Dredging Company's (NMDC) new, state-of-the-art Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD) launched in September. The 6,000 m3 capacity TSHD was designed by the IHC shipyard in the Netherlands in close cooperation with NMDC. The customized solution combines a shallow draft and a deep dredging depth with high manoeuvrability. The vessel has been specially designed to operate in high ambient temperatures, and the Wärtsilä machinery is capable of operating efficiently in such conditions.
Stone Marine, NGC Marine Launch Joint Company
Propeller design and manufacturing company Stone Marine Propulsion has joined forces with NGC Marine of China to form a new supplier of propulsion solutions and marine gearbox equipment. The new U.K. based company, Stone Marine Propulsion NGC Ltd, is a subsidiary of Stone Marine Propulsion. It combines the experience of Stone Marine Propulsion in propeller design, hydrodynamics and metallurgy with that of NGC Marine Ltd, a manufacturer of marine propulsion and gearbox equipment. Units are available to suit a range of vessel types and sizes, including merchant, commercial and offshore.
New Bronze Propeller for Arctic Ops
Finnish company TEVO Oy said it has developed a cost-effective alternative for steel propellers. The result of a large product development project, TEVO said it can now design and manufacture an optimal bronze propeller construction for 1A Super (PC-6) class. A bronze propeller designed for 1A Super class with optimized efficiency and noise characteristics has been verified in full-scale sea tests in the northernmost part of the Baltic Sea, particularly in harsh ice conditions of the northern part of the Gulf of Bothnia.

Wärtsilä Propulsion for First UK Dual-fuel Ships
he first ever UK domestic dual-fuelled new build vessels will feature fully integrated Wärtsilä propulsion machinery packages. Wärtsilä will also supply extended engineering and site support services. The two ships, both 102 metre long ro-ro passenger ferries, are being built for Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) based in Port Glasgow, Scotland. The contracts with Wärtsilä were recorded in December 2015. Besides being the first dual-fuel vessels for CMAL, they are also the first ever dual-fuel ships to be built in the UK. These will be built by Ferguson Marine Engineering Ltd.
20+ Year COMPAC Wear in Canadian Navy Patrol Frigates

Van Oord Orders Two New Dredgers
Rotterdam-based dredging and marine contractor Van Oord has recently ordered two trailing-suction hopper dredgers as part of its continuous investment program. The vessels will be constructed at CNN LaNaval Shipyard in Sestao, Spain with delivery dates scheduled for 2017. Each vessel will feature a complete MAN Diesel & Turbo propulsion package with MAN 6L48/60CR engines, RENK gearboxes with PTO, MAN Alpha CP Propeller systems, AHT (Alpha High Thrust) Propeller nozzles and MAN Alpha AT3000 propulsion-control systems.
Thordon Bearing's Compac to Keep Seaside Clean
MSC Cruises has specified Thordon Bearings’ COMPAC water-lubricated propeller shaft system for the first of two (plus option) Seaside-class cruise ships currently under construction at Fincantieri’s Monfalcone yard. The 154,000grt twin-screw vessel, the largest cruise ship ever to be built by the Italian yard, will be equipped with six COMPAC bearings in bronze carriers with tapered keysets to fit 664mm shaft diameters. Controllable-pitch propellers have been developed and produced on the Baltic coast of Germany since 1962 – initially in Rostock, and then in Wismar from 1964. The first units were manufactured for 86 freezer-trawlers of type Tropik for the Soviet Union. Four further types were produced for GDR fishery vessels. The first years of controllable-pitch propeller production in Wismar centered on systems with a power rating of 1,930 kW for 199 freezer-trawlers of type Atlantik. A total of 230 controllable-pitch propeller systems were delivered up to the end of 1969.
