SAAM Towage Takes Sanmar-built Tug

Sanmar Shipyards delivered BOGACAY XXXI, a 2018 built RAmparts 2400-SX Class ASD Tug to SAAM’s Towage fleet in Panama. She is re-named as “SAAM Valparaiso”. Principal dimensions are 24.4 x 11.25m. SAAM Valparaiso can achieve 70 tonnes of bollard pull courtesy of its 2 x CAT 3516C engines, which develop 4200 kW coupled to a pair of Kongsberg (ex Rolls-Royce) US 255 FP thrusters. SAAM Valparaiso has been docked at Sanmar’s own floating dock and painted to SAAM Towage fleet colors…

New Safety Recommendations for Vessel Batteries

Rolls-Royce, RAL Collaborate on LNG Pushboat

Rolls-Royce and Canadian vessel designers Robert Allan have developed the world's first shallow-water push boat powered by LNG natural gas engines. Jon Holvik was named Thrustmaster's Executive Vice President for Business Development of Dynamic Positioning Systems.

Holvik joins Thrustmaster

Thrustmaster of Texas acquired the ICON Dynamic Positioning business from Rolls Royce earlier this year, a DP product addition to the Thrustmaster product portfolio. In addition to the rights to produce and sell future units of the DP products, Thrustmaster also has responsibility for the maintenance, service and upgrades of existing DP systems presently in operation. To support this addition, Thrustmaster has added Jon Holvik to the Thrustmaster team as the Executive Vice President for Business Development of Dynamic Positioning Systems.

Mobilgard for Plug-In Hybrid Vessel

ExxonMobil is supplying Mobilgard ADL 40 engine oil for Color Hybrid, Color Line’s latest addition to its fleet of ferries. The vessel is the world’s largest plug-in battery hybrid ship and was recently named ‘ship of the year 2019’ by Nor-Shipping.The vessel, which is already in service between Sandefjord, Norway, and Strömstad, Sweden, is capable of carrying 2,000 passengers and 500 cars. Fast Ferry Brilliance of Majestic Launched

Incat Crowther announced the launch of Brilliance of Majestic, the first in a new class vessel. Brilliance of Majestic is the first of a third class of vessel designed by Incat Crowther for the operator, Majestic Fast Ferry. At 33m and 39m respectively, the previous vessels housed their passengers in a single deck configuration that reduced weight and construction complexity. The Brilliance class was driven by the requirement to carry more passengers at greater speed, while giving business class passengers an exclusive experience.

Port of Luleå 36m Hybrid Icebreaker Tug Delivered

The powerful 36 meter hybrid icebreaker tug Vilja was delivered to her Owner, Port of Luleå, on June 26th, 2019 at Gondan Shipyard in Spain. On July 4th, Vilja arrived in Luleå and the crew was very satisfied with the first sailing experience and tug performance on the journey home. The vessel will soon be used for ice management, firefighting and navigation aids service duties in the Port of Luleå, Sweden and will assist ships and conduct coastal towing in the northern sector of the Gulf of Bothnia.Vilja is a 36 meter TundRA 3600–H, Icebreaking Escort Tug designed by Robert Allan Ltd.

Incat Crowther Designs Korean Ferry

Incat Crowther has announced a contract to design a 65m catamaran passenger ferry for operation in Korea. The Incat Crowther 65 will be built by Khan Co., Ltd of Geoje-si, Korea and operated by Dolphin Shipping Co., Ltd.The vessel will provide a vital link between Pohang, on mainland Korea and the island of Ulleung-do, where it will be the second largest vessel on the route. Sanmar Delivers ASD Tug to Marintug

Sanmar Shipyards delivered a 24 meter ASD Tug with 60 tbp to Marintug of Turkey.This vessel is a RAmparts 2400SX-type with a 60 tonnes bollard pull, designed by Robert Allan Ltd.It is powered by a pair of Caterpillar 3512C main engines that each can produce 1765kW power with 1800 rpm’s which is combined with Rolls Royce US 205 FP ASD thrusters with built-in slip clutches. New Ferry the Red Kestrel Completed

Merseyside shipbuilder Cammell Laird has completed the building the $13 million ferry the Red Kestrel, for Isle of Wight ferry operator Red Funnel.The Red Kestrel, a new freight-only RoRo vessel, sailed away from Cammell Laird’s famous River Mersey shipyard following a nine-month build program. In total the project used 45 British supply chain businesses and generated 3000 man hours of work for Cammell Laird's apprentices. Cammell Laird further employed 200 direct workers, 200 sub-contractors and 10 apprentices on the contract.The Red Kestrel will operate between Southampton and Isle of Wight.

Havila Kystruten, Kongsberg Ink Long-term Service Deal

Havila Kystruten and Kongsberg have signed a 10-year  “Power-by-the-Hour” service agreement for four new coastal cruise vessels that are currently under construction. The contract value is 150 million kroner ($17.5 million).Power-by-the-Hour was launched in 2017, and was first sold to the cargo operator NorLines the same year. The agreement means that the vessel owner is handing the responsibility for service planning and performance back to the equipment’s supplier, Kongsberg Maritime. The customer pays a fixed charge per hour of operation, per ship.

Keel Laid for Foss Tier IV Tugboat

Foss Maritime announced the keel laying of the first of its new class of ASD 90 tugboat, to be built at Nichols Brothers Boat Builders in Freeland, Washington.Nicole Engle, one of the principals of Foss’ parent company, Saltchuk, made the first ceremonial weld of her initials into the keel, assisted by journeyman welder Justina Mackie.Speaking after the ceremony, John Parrott, President and CEO of Foss Maritime, said "The new tugs are designed to upgrade our fleet and improve the company’s ability to provide timely harbor and port services to a variety of customers.

New Ferry for Red Funnel Floated Out

Cammell Laird recently floated out a new $13 million ferry built for Isle of Wight ferry operator Red Funnel.Dubbed Red Kestrel, the freight-only RoRo is slated to operate between Southampton and Isle of Wight, scheduled to join the fleet in May 2019 after finish and sea trials. Red Kestrel is Red Funnel’s first ship to be designed for freight traffic. As a freight vessel it is limited to 12 passengers and builtspecifically to provide additional year-round freight capacity for Red Funnel’s Southampton-East Cowes route, which currently handles 53% of all freight movements across the Solent.

Scania Powers New Twin City Liner Ferry

Twin City Liner is a  39m low wash, high-speed catamaran ferry for operation by Twin City Liner on the Danube River between Vienna and Bratislava. The vessel was built by Wight Shipyard, with local support from Incat Crowther Europe.Operating on the Danube takes many interesting design specifications, and to this end the ferry features a low draft of 0.8m, minimal wake / wash, low air draft and a hull form designed for restricted waters where high current and debris are encountered. A retractable mast facilitates navigation and radar functions whilst fitting under low bridges.
