"Bonny River" TSH Dredger Delivered

The trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Bonny River built at Royal IHC’s Chinese partner yard COSCO Guangdong Shipyard was recently delivered to the Belgian dredging company DEME. The TSHD features a number of advance technologies, and is driven by controllable pitch propellers and transverse thrusters from Schottel. SPARTACUS: World’s Largest Cutter Suction Dredger Launched

On November 10, Royal IHC successfully launched the Spartacus, a 44,180kW self-propelled cutter suction dredger (CSD) designed and built for DEME. The ceremony took place at IHC's shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, The Netherlands. It was performed by Mrs Fabienne Ackermans, the spouse of Mr Luc Bertrand (chairman of the Board of Directors of Ackermans & van Haaren, owner of DEME).Spartacus is reportedly the world’s largest CSD and the first to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The four main engines can run on LNG, marine diesel oil (MDO) and heavy fuel oil (HFO).

Royal IHC Completes Two-year Dredger Overhaul

The self-propelled cutter suction dredger (CSD) Huta 14 has resumed operations for Saudi Arabian owner Huta Marine following two-years of renovation work performed by Royal IHC. The overhaul, which involved replacing Huta 14’s three large diesel engines, as well as integrating an electrical installation for the underwater pump engine and drive, was completed by IHC Middle East based in Dubai with support from IHC’s Asset Upgrade Services department in The Netherlands. MAN Diesel & Turbo Tallies Chinese Dredger Contracts

Over a period of four months, MAN Diesel & Turbo has won contracts for four Chinese dredger newbuildings. Chinese outfits CHECD, Jiangsu Haixin and Huanghua Port Bureau recently chose MAN medium-speed engines for trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) newbuildings. CHEC Dredging Company Ltd. (CHECD) – a subsidiary of CCCC Shanghai Dredging Company Ltd., a branch of CCCC Dredging Company Ltd. (CDC), one of the leading dredging companies in the world and the largest in China – chose complete propulsion packages from MAN Diesel & Turbo for their new 2 × 6,500 m3 TSHDs.

VDVMS Equips New TSHD Magdalen

A new Jones Act trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Magdalen, recently launched at Eastern Shipbuilding Group’s (ESG) Allanton facility in Panama City, Fla., is expected to be handed over to its owner, U.S. dredging contractor Weeks Marine, before the end of 2017. This modern TSHD has a length of 108.5 meters, breadth of 24.24 meters and a molded depth of 8.31 meters. The state-of-the-art 356’ twin screw dredger is outfitted with BARKE high-lift flap rudders by Van der Velden Marine Systems (VDVMS) in conjunction with Ships Machinery International, Inc. (SMI).

Dual-fuel Solution to Drive World's Mightiest Cutter Dredger

Wärtsilä said it has been contracted to supply a comprehensive package of engines and propulsion machinery for a new cutter suction dredger (CSD) vessel slated to become the world's most powerful and first ever to be fuelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG). The newbuild, Spartacus, is being built at the Royal IHC yard in the Netherlands on behalf of Belgium based Dredging International (DEME). The order with Wärtsilä, worth around $21 million, was booked in the fourth quarter of 2016. The 164-meter-long vessel will have a total installed power of 44,180 kW.

Video: LNG-powered Dredger Scheldt River Launched

DEME Group’s second LNG-powered trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Scheldt River is part of a new generation of dual fuel hoppers that set out to achieve new standards in environmental performance. Launched January 14 at Royal IHC's shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, The Netherlands, the 7,950m3 vessel possesses a number of innovative features and technologies, including an IHC-patented two-speed gearbox as well as a newly developed wing-shaped bow thruster tunnel. First LNG-powered Hopper Dredger Launched

The launch ceremony of DEME’s 3,500m3 LNG-powered trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) MINERVA took place on 3 December at Royal IHC's shipyard in Kinderdijk, The Netherlands. The official name giving and christening ceremony will take place in the spring of 2017 in Zeebrugge, Belgium. "The launch of this vessel is an important milestone for the dredging industry,” says IHC's Executive Director Shipbuilding, Arjan Klijnsoon. “IHC had already started to investigate the integration of LNG into dredging vessels in 2012, enabling us to understand the challenges of this green solution.

Wärtsilä to Power Two Indian Dredgers

Wärtsilä has won an order for two new 8000m3 trailing suction hopper dredgers being built for the Adani group, India's largest private multi-port operator. The vessels are the first of a new IHC Beagle series designed by Royal IHC (IHC) of the Netherlands. IHC will also build the dredgers. The contract with Wärtsilä was signed in February, 2016. The Wärtsilä scope of supply comprises two 8-cylinder Wärtsilä 32 main engines for the first vessel, and two 7-cylinder Wärtsilä 32 main engines for the second one, together with four Wärtsilä CPPs with shafts.

Dual-fuel Engines for DEME’s New Dredger

Anglo Belgian Corporation, a manufacturer of medium speed diesel engines, announced the sale of two 16VDZD dual fuel engines that will power a new build vessel for the Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group DEME. This agreement was officialized with the Dutch shipyard Royal IHC. The commissioning of the dredger Minerva is scheduled for late 2016, making it the first dredging vessel that will be equipped with dual fuel engines, in addition to DEME's other trailing suction hopper dredger Scheldt River that will be built and put into service around the same time.

Wärtsilä to Power First Dual-Fuelled Dredger

A new generation "Antigoon" class dredger, called Scheldt River, being built by Royal IHC in the Netherlands on behalf of the Belgium based DEME Group, is to be powered by Wärtsilä dual-fuel (DF) engines. This will be the first ever dredger to operate on engines capable of utilising either liquefied natural gas (LNG) or conventional marine fuels. The contract with Wärtsilä was signed in July. The 104-meter-long vessel will have a hopper volume capacity of approximately 8,000 cubic metres.

DEME Orders LNG-powered Dredgers from Royal IHC

Royal IHC has been awarded a contract for the design, construction and delivery of two unique low-emission dredging vessels to DEME in Belgium, the builder announced today. The 7,950m3 and 3,000m3 (expandable to 3,500m3) trailing suction hopper dredgers (TSHDs) are the first to be provided with a liquefied natural gas (LNG) installation. The unique arrangements for the propulsion and dredge pump drive, combined with the LNG installation will reduce fuel consumption and ensure extremely low levels of emissions.

Royal IHC sells Subsidiary IHC Sealing Solutions

Royal IHC (IHC) has reached an agreement to sell 100% of its shares in its subsidiary IHC Sealing Solutions to new owners Willem Steenge, who as CEO is partly responsible for the strong growth of IHC Sealing Solutions in recent years, and Rabo Participaties (RaPar). The sale enables IHC to strengthen its focus on its core business: offering integrated innovative vessels, advanced equipment and life-cycle support to the dredging, wet mining and offshore construction industries.
