China Builds 30,000-tonne Nuclear-Powered Ship

China is working to develop a 33,069-ton nuclear icebreaker, which would be even bigger than the epic nuclear-powered vessels built by Russia.South China Morning Post reported that while the purpose of the ship has not been specified, the plan is to have a 152-metre long, 32-metre wide and with a displacement of 30,000 tonnes.China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) has invited bids for the contract to build the vessel and it is described in the tender documents as an “experimental platform”.The deadline for interested parties to tender was Wednesday (yesterday)…

Wärtsilä to Power Two New Fishing Trawlers

Wärtsilä said it has been contracted to provide the engines and the complete propulsion package, including the propulsion control system for two new fishing trawlers being built for Murmansk, Russia based Nord Pilgrim Ltd. The ships are to be constructed at the PJSC Vyborg shipyard in Russia. The orders with Wärtsilä were booked in June, 2017. The 80-meter-long trawlers will be reinforced to Ice3 class, thereby enabling them to extend their fishing operations in the Barents Sea and North Atlantic.

Wärtsilä Invests in Turbocharger Services

Wärtsilä said it has invested to expand its offering and global service workshop footprint in turbocharger services. Wärtsilä has more than 20 service workshops globally equipped with full capability to service turbochargers, and with its recent investment the company is able to offer turbocharger services coupled with engine knowhow in flexible cooperation with other Wärtsilä service centers. Customers can reduce operational risk and save time by being able to overhaul the turbocharger and the engine simultaneously.

First LNG-fueled Aframax Tankers Ordered

Hyundai Heavy Industries’ shipbuilding affiliate Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (HSHI) said it recently won a $240 million order to build four 114,000 DWT Ice-Class IA aframax tankers from Sovcomflot, the Russia’s state-owned shipping company. The vessels are said to be the world’s first LNG-fueled aframax tankers, and will measure 250 meters in length, 44 meters in width and 21 meters in height. They are scheduled to be delivered from the third quarter of 2018 and to be chartered to Shell.

Kineteco Expands Distributor Network

Kineteco International, a U.K. spring starter manufacturer, appointed a new European and Russian distributor to push export sales. Kineteco added Hatraco, a Netherlands-based supply company, which will be tasked with increasing sales and raising Kineteco’s profile across continental Europe and Russia, aside from the Benelux countries. This deal follows the earlier appointments of Atlantic Diesel Services (ADS) as UK distributor and Kemper en Van Twist (KVT) for the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.

IMO Moves toward Phase out of HFO in the Arctic

The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC70) meeting brought progress by member countries toward a phase out of the use of heavy fuel oil (HFO) by vessels operating in the Arctic. Heavy fuel oil (HFO) breaks down extremely slowly in cold Arctic waters and is very difficult clean up in the event of a spill. While HFO powers some 44 percent of the ships currently operating in the Arctic, it accounts for more than 75 percent of the fuel onboard those ships, according to ICCT figures.

Versatile Response Vessel from Russia

A challenge for designers or an emergency response vessel is deciding to what type of emergency the boat will respond. The designers at the non-government Marine Engineering Bureau in Odessa Ukraine have fitted a very wide range of capabilities into their 31.73 by 9.7-meter tug. The vessel’s beams and 4.1-meter molded depth will give it the stability for handling heavy ships. The azimuthing stern drive tug will be ready to handle a wide range of services. These will range from towing various objects to auxiliary operations in the harbor area.

US Navy 'Green Fleet' Fills up with Italian-made Biofuel

A U.S. warship took its first delivery of Italian-made biofuel on Thursday as part of the Navy's programme to use more alternative energy. The USS Mason was refuelled alongside an Italian vessel, the Andrea Doria, in the seas off of Italy's southern coast with a mix produced by Italy's Eni that has 5.5 percent palm oil biofuel blended into marine fuel. The two destroyers travelled at about 5 knots side by side with a supply ship, the Etna, between them pumping the fuel to both ships through large black tubes. "It's a first today," U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus told Reuters aboard the Mason.
