Alfa Laval PureSOx Scrubber Systems – 10 Years at Sea

The arrival of 2019 leaves just one year until the global sulphur cap becomes reality. But as the marine industry scrambles to ready itself, an important milestone has already been reached. The new year marks a decade since the first vessel set sail with an Alfa Laval PureSOx scrubber on board.In 2009, the RoRo vessel DFDS Ficaria Seaways entered dry dock for an expansion of its cargo space. While the vessel was being rebuilt, a hybrid PureSOx system – able to perform closed-loop as well as open-loop scrubbing – was retrofitted to clean the exhaust gas from its 21 MW main engine.

MAN Scores OffShore Wind Reference

MAN Energy Solutions reported that it won an order to supply the engines for a new heavy-lift crane installation-vessel for Oslo-based OHT (Offshore Heavy Transport).In total, MAN ES will supply four MAN 12V32/44CR GenSets with a total output of 28,800 kW for the ship, which is being built at the shipyard of China Merchants Heavy Industry in Haimen/Nantong with delivery due in Q4, 2020. The order is for a single vessel, with options for three more.The Alfa Lift is a heavy installation crane vessel design with semi-submersible heavy transportation capabilities.

Marine Power: First Order for High-Pressure SCR for Two-Stroke Engines

MAN Energy Solutions announced the first order for its SCR-HP (Selective Catalytic Reduction – High Pressure) product. Mitsui (MES) has ordered 3 × SCR-HP (cluster 3) units in connection with the building of three 87,000-dwt bulk carriers for the Ocean 21 Holdings .Each ship is to be powered by a single MAN B&W 6S46ME-B8.5 low-speed engine delivering 9,900 kW at 84 rpm, and aspirated by an MAN TCA66 turbocharger. Importantly, the engines will meet IMO Tier III emission standards. MAN Energy Solutions introduced SCR-HP along with its licensee, MES, in 2017.

MSC Secures Scrubber Loan For 86 Vessels

Container shipping giant Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has secured a USD 439 million financing to fit 86 exhaust gas cleaning system (EGCS) or scrubbers  to its fleet.BNP Paribas (BNPP) was the co-ordinating bank and agent on the agreement, together with a syndicate of four other banks as lenders, said the law company Watson Farley & Williams (WFW).The SINOSURE-backed loan would be used to finance the manufacturing and installation of the scrubbers on board 86 container ships owned by the MSC group in light of the implementation of the International Maritime Organisation’s low sulphur c

IMO 2020: Aderco Advises "Plan Ahead"

Aderco is reminding ship owners, ship managers and operators that they should already have started planning to comply with the IMO’s 2020 global sulphur cap.Olivier Baiwir, CEO of Aderco, believes some in the maritime industry perceive the start of the cap as being nearly a year away but they need to rethink that position and quickly to ensure they will be compliant with the new regulations..“The IMO sulphur cap starts on January 1, 2020 but in reality the planning for compliance is just over a month away.

SCHOTTEL's Mechanical Hybrid Propulsion Solution

In a close collaboration with Svitzer of Denmark, SCHOTTEL has developed a new hybrid propulsion concept. The new concept is based on the recent SCHOTTEL Y-Hybrid thruster technology and connects a port and starboard mounted azimuth thruster in a vessel with each other. This makes it possible to drive two thrusters with either one of the main engines. The companies are now discussing a pilot project to retrofit an existing tug with the new mechanical hybrid technology. This will transform the direct driven vessel into a greener and more cost-efficient vessel.

Rolls-Royce Invests $65m to Upgrade Thruster Facility

Japan’s Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) held a naming ceremony at its Sakaide shipyard for the new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier owned jointly by NYK Line and JERA.The ceremony was attended by Hendrik Gordenker, chairman of JERA Co. Inc.; Yasumi Kudo, chairman of NYK; and a number of related parties.At the ceremony, the ship was named “Shinshu Maru” by Mr. Gordenker and the ceremonial rope holding the vessel in place was cut by his wife. Thrustmaster Buys Rolls-Royce DP

Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine has signed an agreement to sell the product Dynamic Positioning (DP) to the U.S. based company Thrustmaster of Texas, Inc.The agreement means that Thrustmaster of Texas now takes over the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) required to produce and sell the DP product.
