Wärtsilä Supplies Propulsion for Fishing Vessel
Lunar Fishing Company Ltd, based in Scotland, is replacing its existing Lunar Bow purse seiner trawler with a new ship having the same name. The primary considerations were to achieve both economic and environmental benefits through selecting the market’s most efficient propulsion machinery. The vessel is being built at the Karstensens Skibsvaerft shipyard in Denmark and will feature a fully integrated propulsion solution from Wärtsilä. The main engine chosen is the Wärtsilä 31, listed by Guinness World Records as being the world’s most efficient four-stroke diesel engine.
Berthon Named UK, Ireland Distributor for Cox Powertrain
British marine diesel innovator Cox Powertrain has announced Berthon as the sole U.K. and Ireland distributor for its high powered, low weight diesel outboard engines, the first of which, the CXO300, will be launched next year. From its Lymington base, Berthon will be responsible for sales of the engines in the Solent and along the south coast and will hold stock of new engines and spare parts at its warehouse. VT Halter Wins VDOT Ferry Contract
The passenger vessel construction market remains one of the few maritime bright spots, as The Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Transportation (VDOT) has awarded a contract to VT Halter Marine to design and build a 499-passenger/70-vehicle Jamestown Ferry to replace the current ferry, The Virginian. The ferry will be operated by the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry Operations Service which provides a critical transportation link between Virginia and North Carolina operating at the James City County at Glasshouse Point and Surry County at Scotland Wharf.
Scottish Ferries Contract for Parker Bestobell Marine
Parker Bestobell Marine, part of Parker Hannifin, has won a contract to supply cryogenic globe and check valves for two Caledonian MacBrayne Ferries (Calmac) being built at Ferguson Marine Engineering in Glasgow. The valves will be installed in the liquid natural gas (LNG) fuel gas systems of these vessels, which are the first U.K. built ships that will run on this environmentally friendly fuel. The new ferries will be ‘dual-fuel’ vessels so they can operate on both LNG and marine diesel.
Thales to Take Key Role in 'Exercise Unmanned Warrior'
Thales is set to play a key role in a major U.K. Royal Navy exercise later this year to understand how unmanned systems might add real innovative operational capability in a military maritime environment. Exercise Unmanned Warrior will bring together the Royal Navy and 40 organizations from defense, industry and academia in October, representing the largest exercise of its kind. Wärtsilä Propulsion for First UK Dual-fuel Ships
he first ever UK domestic dual-fuelled new build vessels will feature fully integrated Wärtsilä propulsion machinery packages. Wärtsilä will also supply extended engineering and site support services. The two ships, both 102 metre long ro-ro passenger ferries, are being built for Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) based in Port Glasgow, Scotland. The contracts with Wärtsilä were recorded in December 2015. Besides being the first dual-fuel vessels for CMAL, they are also the first ever dual-fuel ships to be built in the UK. Norwegian Fish Food Carrier to Run on LNG
Rolls-Royce has signed a $6.5 million contract with Tersan Shipyard in Turkey to supply a liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion package for a cargo carrier designed by NSK Ship Design for Norwegian ship owner NSK Shipping. The vessel will deliver fish food on behalf of BioMar Group. The new cargo carrier will be a slightly larger sister ship to NSK Shipping’s MS Høydal which was the world’s first LNG powered cargo vessel and which was delivered from Tersan Shipyard in 2012. Both ships are designed by NSK Ship Design.
Cummins VP Awarded MBE by Queen Elizabeth
John Iain Barrowman, Vice President - High-Horsepower Operations and a senior director of Cummins Ltd., has been awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the New Year 2016 Honors List in recognition of his contribution to British industry. Barrowman was appointed as an MBE by Queen Elizabeth following a recommendation submitted by Prime Minister David Cameron. Wärtsilä Design & Propulsion Machinery for Pelagic Trawler
A new pelagic fishing trawler ordered by Scottish owner Mewstead LLP will be built according to a Wärtsilä design and will feature a broad scope of Wärtsilä propulsion machinery. The ship is to be built at the Nauta Shipyard in Poland and when completed will be the largest and most efficient ship of its type in the world. The contract with Wärtsilä was signed in November. Delivery of the vessel is scheduled for mid-2017. The decision to choose the Wärtsilä ship design was based on the high level of efficiency derived from the optimised hull lines.

The British, French and Canadians are searching the seas off Scotland for a Russian submarine detected off the northern coast 10 days ago, reports the Australian. French patrol planes are scouring the seas off Scotland for a Russian submarine after Britain was forced to call on allies for help because it has scrapped its own sub-hunting aircraft. BBC says that an RAF plane is "conducting activity" off the Scottish coast, the Ministry of Defence says, amid reports of a Russian submarine being spotted in the area.

Wärtsilä Propulsion for New Fishing Vessel
A new fishing vessel being built by Simek AS in Norway on behalf of the U.K. operator Antares (Whalsay) Fishing Company Ltd, will feature an integrated Wärtsilä propulsion solution including main engine, controllable pitch propeller and gearbox. According to Wärtsilä, its two-speed gearbox, PTO/PTI and floating frequency solution will provide the vessel with high levels of operational efficiency and flexibility in different operating modes, which were important considerations in the award of this contract signed in June.
HMS Queen Elizabeth Powers to Life
U.K. Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth has produced power from her onboard diesel generators (DGs) for the first time, marking a significant stage in the program. Firing up the diesel generators for the first time in Rosyth was Philip Dunne, Minister of State for Defense Procurement, who took part in a short ceremony and was accompanied by Rear Admiral Henry Parker representing the Ministry of Defense on the Aircraft Carrier Alliance (ACA), and Sir Peter Gershon, the Independent Chairman of the ACA.
Electric & Hybrid Propulsion Ordered fir CMAL Ferry
Imtech Marine informs it has been awarded a third contract to supply the electric and hybrid propulsion system for a hybrid ferry operated by Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) of Scotland. Ferguson Marine, the Glasgow-based yard which built the first two CMAL diesel electric, hybrid seagoing ferries, launched a tender last year and Imtech Marine was given the contract in late February. For the third hybrid ferry, Imtech Marine will, next to the diesel-electric and Li-Ion battery hybrid propulsion system, additionally carry out the electrical installation.
Damen Delivers Tug for Scrabster Harbor
Scrabster Harbor Trust (UK) has taken delivery of a new harbor tug / workboat, a Damen Stan Tug 1606. The vessel, named Highlanders, will replace itscurrent workboat which was built in 1976. The new tug will undertake pilotage, towing, general harbour and maintenance duties. Scrabster Harbour in northern Scotland is attracting much larger vessels and cargoes in need of larger tugs for their assistance. The steel hulled, twin screw vessel has a 16 ton bollard pull, and is also equipped with a dredging plough and A-frame for lifting.
