Maersk to Install Scrubbers on Select Vessels Ahead of 2020

Nearly Half of Interlake Fleet Fit with Scrubbers

The M/V Mesabi Miner has sailed from Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding Company in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., becoming Interlake Steamship Company’s fourth self-unloading bulk carrier to be outfitted with exhaust gas scrubbers. Interlake became the first U.S.-flag fleet to test freshwater scrubbers on the Great Lakes in April 2015 after pioneering the emission-reduction technology on its M/V Hon. James L. Oberstar. In 2016, the company outfitted its first thousand foot vessel, the M/V James R. Barker, and its 826-foot M/V Lee A. Tregurtha in its second phase of exhaust gas scrubber implementation.

New Fuel Regs Drive Scrubber Business

The Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Association and its members are preparing to meet higher demand for gas scrubbing systems to bring SOx emissions in line with the targets set by the IMO’s 2020 fuel sulfur content proposals. As previously reported by this correspondent in Maritime Reporter and Engineering News (December 2016 issue, page 24; January 2017 issue, page 28), the IMO has come in for some severe criticism over its proposals to introduce a global marine fuels sulfur content cap of 0.5 percent (mass/mass) by the year 2020.

Scrubbers Set to Help Shippers Meet the New Sulfur Cap

BV Approves Ionada Membrane Scrubber on Nolhanava

Bureau Veritas (BV) has approved the Ionada Membrane Scrubber on M/V Nolhanava for operation in Emission Control Areas (ECAs). The vessel will continue to burn heavy fuel while achieving the regulated 0.1% sulfur limit on emissions required under International Maritime Law, with zero discharge into the ocean. The unique microporous ceramic membrane is the only design that provides zero discharge overboard, while continuing to allow shipowners to save money operating on low cost heavy fuel oil.

Babcock Noell’s Scrubbers Making Waves

With two far-reaching events scheduled to take place in the coming weeks, September 2016 will be a special month for Babcock Noell GmbH as the company announced new scrubber installations and its debut at SMM in Hamburg. In the last couple of months the Würzburg-based company has transferred its know-how of the flue gas desulfurization of land-based expertise of more than 80 realized SOx-Scrubbers into the maritime sector. Currently, a hybrid SOx-Scrubber is installed as a multi-stream system and will be commissioned for a 24000dwt product tanker shipping company Carl Büttner from Bremen.

MARAD Backs Emissions Reduction Projects

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced it will provide more than $1 million to support the development of two new emission-reducing maritime solutions. The first is a liquefied natural gas (LNG) conversion demonstration project, and the second is modification of an on-board air pollution control device that will aid the U.S. maritime industry’s effort to decrease its environmental footprint. “The Department continues to fund innovative projects that support a steady shift towards cleaner and sustainable transportation options,” said U.S.

Exhaust Gas Scrubber Guide Updated

An updated version of the “Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Selection Guide” is now available, the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced today. Developed by the Ship Operations Cooperative Program with funding from MARAD’s Maritime Environmental and Technical Assistance (META) Program, the guide provides ship owners and operators information on scrubber technology to assist the industry in meeting new sulfur emissions standards. Interlake Steamship to Install Scrubbers on 2 More Ships

Following the implementation of exhaust gas scrubbers on its self-unloading bulk carrier M/V Hon. James L. Oberstar, the Interlake Steamship Company has announced its plans to expand its emission-reduction efforts to one-third of its fleet by installing similar scrubber systems on the M/V Lee A. Tregurtha and M/V James R. Barker early next year. In April 2015, Interlake became the first U.S.-flag fleet to test freshwater scrubbers on the Great Lakes when the system became operational on the 806-foot Oberstar.
