World's First: Wartsila Intros Hybrid Retrofit
The Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has signed an agreement with the international shipping company Hagland Shipping AS for a hybrid retrofit installation.The project will take place onboard the ‘Hagland Captain’, a general cargo vessel owned by Hagland Shipping. It will be the first project of its kind ever in short-sea shipping applications. The agreement was signed in December 2018.The installation of a Wärtsilä battery hybrid propulsion solution will significantly enhance the ship’s environmental performance by reducing its emissions, fuel consumption, and noise.
Baleària Builds World's First Gas Engine-Powered High-Speed Catamaran

Wärtsilä's Propulsion For First CNG Carrier
The world's first ever carrier vessel for compressed natural gas (CNG) is to be powered by an integrated Wärtsilä propulsion system, chosen for its energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. The vessel is being built at the Jiangsu Hantong shipyard in China ordered by CIMC ENRIC and designed by CIMC ORIC for end user Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), the Indonesian state owned energy company. The order with Wärtsilä was placed during the fourth quarter, 2014. The new vessel will feature a 9-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel main engine operating primarily on gas.
Offshore Living Quarter Modules Delivered by SAL Heavy Lift
SAL Heavy Lift recently transported two living quarter modules from the fabrication yard in Stord, Norway to their destination in Onne, Nigeria. In addition to the sea transportation of the modules, SAL arranged a multi-modal pre-carriage from the manufacturer to the berth where MV “Lone” loaded the Living Quarters. For the pre-carriage, SAL and Norwegian agents Alex Birger Grieg mobilized a 9,000 mtons dwt flat top barge which was towed from Stavanger by a 50 tbp tug to the fabrication yard’s load out quay, which is inaccessible for ocean carriers.
Warship Received by Royal Thai Navy
The Royal Thai Navy has officially received the first Endurance-class landing platform dock ship, HTMS Angthong (LPD-791) at Laem Thien Port, Sattahip naval base in Chon Buri, Thailand. Maritime Pollution and Other Legislation Outlook 2012
It has been almost two years since the Deepwater Horizon incident occurred on April 20, 2010. As a result of this incident, although there have been many bills introduced in Congress to address issues raised by this incident, as well as numerous related hearings, Congress was unable to see the way clear to actually enact any pollution-related legislation, or for that matter any substantial maritime legislation in 2011. The following is a summary of the action taken by Congress last year and a perspective on such legislation for 2012.

Expected result compares with $.57 per share for the 2010 third quarter, fueled by continued strong inland marine transportation and land-based diesel engine services markets. Kirby to announce 2011 third quarter results on Wednesday, October 26, 2011, with conference call on Thursday, October 27, 2011. Kirby Corporation announced today that it expects its 2011 third quarter net earnings to exceed $.90 per share, above the top end of Kirby's earnings guidance of $.82 to $.87 per share, and substantially above 2010 third quarter earnings of $.57 per share.
FAST 2011: Addressing Speed on the Water
FAST 2011 is the 11th International Conference on Fast Sea Transportation. Started in Trondheim, Norway in 1991, FAST conferences take place every two years and are the world’s leading conferences addressing fast sea transportation issues. Recent FAST conferences were held in Athens, Greece (2009), Shanghai, China (2007), and St. Petersburg, Russia (2005). According to Todd Peltzer, director of programs for Honolulu-based Navatek, FAST 2011 will be held in Honolulu, Hawaii, from September 26 to 29, 2011, at the Regency Ballroom Convention Center of the Hyatt Regency Waikiki hotel.
Kirby Corporation Announces 2011 First Quarter Results
Houston, Texas (April 27, 2011) – Kirby Corporation (“Kirby”) (NYSE:KEX) today announced net earnings attributable to Kirby for the first quarter ended March 31, 2011 of $32.4 million, or $.60 per share, compared with $24.7 million, or $.46 per share, for the 2010 first quarter. The 2010 first quarter net earnings included a charge for retirements and shore staff reductions of $4.1 million before taxes, or $.05 per share. Kirby’s published 2011 first quarter earnings guidance range was $.56 to $.61 per share.
