Seaspan Ship Management selected Alfa Laval to help resolve steam balance and redundancy issues connected to sulfur-compliant fuels. MAN Wins Order for Battery-Hybrid Dual-Fuel System
The Damen Gorinchem Holland shipyard has ordered a hybrid-propulsion solution from MAN Energy Solutions in connection with the building of 2 × dual-fuel/hybrid RoRo ferries for Canadian outfit, Seaspan Ferries Corporation. The order covers the provision of MAN 35/44DF dual-fuel engines, fuel gas-supply systems and the main electric systems, including batteries.MAN Energy Solutions will provide the solutions in association with Aspin Kemp & Associates (AKA), in which it has a 40% stake.

Becker Marine Delivers Rudder for Largest Containership
At 19,000 TEU, the largest container ship in the world is now picking up speed – with a high-performance rudder from the Hamburg-based company. The christening of the CSCL GLOBE containership from China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) at the end of November drew a great deal of attention in the shipping industry, because, with space for 19,000 standard containers (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit or TEU), it is the largest one in the world. The rudder for the ship built at the Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) shipyard in South Korea was delivered by Becker Marine Systems.
Elkon Wins Hybrid Ferry Contract
Elkon (Istanbul), a subsidiary of Imtech Marine, has been awarded an interesting contract from Sedef Shipyard (Tuzla, Istanbul) for the delivery of the electrical equipment, propulsion system and services for two Canadian Seaspan hybrid ferries. The two, 148.9 m, dual-fuelled (diesel and liquefied natural gas) ferries are propelled by a hybrid-electrical propulsion system and can accommodate up to 59 trailers. These state-of-the-art ferries will replace aging vessels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly, while ensuring the highest level of efficiency, performance and reliability.
Getting Real on LNG Fuel
Plentiful supply, low prices and strict regulations on air pollution are fuelling a swift move towards using LNG as fuel for ship propulsion in the USA and Canada. In Europe strict regulation in port is pushing passenger ship owners to use LNG fuel while berthed. For the last two or three years the view about switching to LNG fuel was that it was a chicken and egg situation. That period is over now. The first gas bunker terminals are ready, the first small scale LNG carriers and bunker vessels are in service and the bigger projects are lining up.
STX Wins Seaspan Ferry Design Contract
STX Marine (STXM) has been awarded the contract for the engineering package for Seaspan Ferry Corporation’s fleet replacement program. The completed concept design will form part of a bid package, expected to be released to shipyards for tender in July 2013. The new design will feature a 60 trailer capacity, service speed of 14 knots and a planned 40 year service life. STXM will be examining the latest propulsion technology and energy efficiency technology for incorporation into the design. In addition, the design will include a modern comfortable facility for crew and drivers.
Seaspan Ferries to Install AMP at Swartz Bay Terminal
Seaspan Ferries Corporation's installation of shore electrical power (also known as AMP) to receive Government of Canada funding. Shore power is a highly effective way to reduce marine diesel air emissions by enabling ships to shut down their engines and connect to the local electrical grid in order to power their on-board systems while docked. "Our government is proud to invest in shore power at the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal," said the Honourable James Moore, Minister Responsible for British Columbia.
