The Modern Approach to NOx Reduction
ADNOX A/S, the R&D start-up in which Hans Jensen Lubricators A/S recently acquired the majority stake, has released details of their Advanced Diesel NOx reduction method, “ADNOX”. The ADNOX System is a SCR system using diesel oil as reductant offering more than 80% NOx reduction. The oil injected is converted to heat, leaving 50% more heat for recovery. No need for storage tanks for the reductant. No extra overall costs of reductant. The waste heat can be recovered for production or electricity. Significant reduction of weight and space saving, leaving more cargo space.

Hempel Launches New Hull Performance System
Coatings manufacturer Hempel has rolled out its new Systems for Hull and Propeller Efficiency (SHAPE), which combines elements of hull and propeller efficiency optimization to deliver advice and solutions for ship operators. SHAPE is designed to maximize the quality of performance analysis and to offer expert advice for maximizing hull efficiency and return on investment. Fouling and mechanical damages on the hull can increase the engine power a vessel needs by up to 20 percent.
Reducing Lubrication Oil Consumption
When operating in emission control areas, marine vessels are restricted to reduce the Sulphur content in fuel. The Blending-on-Board system from Maersk Fluid Technology A/S can blend the cylinder oil for all levels of fuel sulphur, while reducing the total lubrication oil consumption by up to 40 percent a year. With this solution, the Danish company has secured an order from China COSCO Shipping Group. “Partly on cylinder oil optimization and partly due to recycling, the Blending-on-Board system enables vessels to save up to 40 percent of the total lube oil consumption.
Wärtsilä Launches Fuel-Saving Pre-Swirl Stator
EnergoFlow is a new energy saving solution that will return ship operators’ investment in less than two years, according to its developer Wärtsilä. By reducing the power losses which occur in the propeller’s slipstream with an optimised inflow, Wärtsilä’s solution improves fuel efficiency by up to 10 percent. The technology group Wärtsilä launches the newest solution in its propulsion efficiency portfolio during November. The product will be introduced at the Europort event in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, on Tuesday, November 7.
New Exhaust Gas Sensor Technology Goes to Market
With market testing now complete, new exhaust gas sensor technology from remote marine data monitoring company Azurtane Limited will go to market. From its new company headquarters in Southampton, Azurtane will market sensor technology for ships developed with support by the UK government under the Innovate UK program. Azurtane began trialing its exhaust gas sensing equipment with Southampton-based ferry company Red Funnel in 2013. The project involved second-by-second measurement of the fuel used on each voyage of the Red Jet 4 Hi-Speed ferry service between Southampton and Cowes.
Faster Propeller Repairs in the Middle East
Aiming to provide faster repair service in the Middle East to ship operators whose vessels have sustained propeller damage, Stone Marine Shipcare has signed a Service Agency Agreement with Dubai Drydock World which sees one of the companies’ mobile workshops permanently based there. The workshop will be used, not just at Drydock Worlds’ own facilities, but can be quickly transported to other Middle Eastern shipyards, wherever a ship is in need of repair or maintenance to its propeller.
BOS Rolls Out New Engine Performance Software
Blue Ocean Solutions (BOS) has introduced new Engine Performance Software designed to provide ship operators with a holistic insight into the operating condition and efficiency of the ship’s engine. The software verifies the fuel savings gained from BOS’ Emulsified Fuel System (EFS), and will be delivered as an add-on to the EFS at no additional cost. The software also evaluates the engine condition against factory test data and establishes current trending profile (patent pending) for preventive maintenance, restoring fuel efficiency and reducing emissions.
First Ship with IMO Tier III EIAPP Engines Launched
The launch of the L’Astrolabe, a 72 metre polar logistics vessel fitted with a complete Wärtsilä propulsion machinery package and Wärtsilä NOR (NOx Reducer) SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) exhaust gas cleaning systems for all the main engines, took place on July 12. This is the first vessel operating with the International Maritime Organisation’s IMO Tier III EIAPP (Engine International Air Pollution Prevention) certified Wärtsilä diesel engines. The ship was built by PIRIOU (France) for the French Southern and Antarctic Lands Administration.

Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has appointed Shell Marine to provide its integrated marine solutions, which include lubricants and services for OOCL Hong Kong. OOCL Hong Kong, currently plying routes between Asia and Europe, is the latest vessel to claim the title of ‘world’s largest containership’, with a capacity of 21,413 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), measuring 400m in length and 59m in width. The ship is equipped with MAN Diesel & Turbo’s (MDT) G-type engines that represent the latest in two-stroke engine technology.

WinGD X52 Diesel FAT and TAT Completed
Following an extensive test program in the presence of eight classification societies, the latest development in Winterthur Gas & Diesel’s Generation X low-speed diesel engine range, the X52, completed both its Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and Type Approval Test (TAT). The newly certified engine is the five-cylinder version of the 52 cm bore X52 diesel from Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD), and completion of the important TAT and FAT signals that the X52 is ready for commercial applications. Testing took place at the Shanghai engine works of WinGD licensee Hudong Heavy Machinery Co., Ltd.

The use of this type of technology can reduce cylinder oil consumption and alleviate issues such as cold corrosion and excessive cylinder wear, according to MFT.
