Ship Tech: GHG Emission Reduction focus of NYK LNG-Fueled PCTC Newbuilds
NYK has concluded a shipbuilding contract with China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing) Co. Ltd. for four LNG-fueled PCTCs to be delivered from 2022 to 2023, intended to transport vehicles mainly to/from Europe and/or to the Middle East.The ships are designed with GHG emission reduction, and to that end they will be outfieed with WinGD’s X-DF2.0 iCER main engine, the first time they will be utilized in the world. According to NYK, the engine consumes less gas and reduces GHG by cutting methane emissions from exhaust gas by approximately 50%.
WinGD, Alfa Laval Develop Solution to Reduce Methane Slip
With methane slip regulations looming as a possibility on the horizon, Sweden-based Alfa Laval and global Swiss engine developer WinGD say they have already cooperated on a solution. ABB Shaft Generators, Turbochargers for DFDS Vessels
ABB shaft generators will raise the energy efficiency on two DFDS vessels which have been designed to meet the latest environmental regulations. Two shaft generators will be installed in each of the cargo Ro-Ro ships allowing the main engines to operate at a wider, more optimal speed range. The shaft generator system takes its power from main engines, thereby increasing safety if there is a failure on the auxiliary engine. The ships’ main engines will also be turbocharged by ABB’s latest generation technology.
GE Signs MOU to Develop COGES LPG-Fueled Ferry Design
GE Aviation’s marine gas turbine business signed a multilateral memorandum of understanding (MOU) to cooperate in the joint development of LPG-fueled ferry design. The ferry will feature GE’s compact and lightweight Combined Gas Turbine, Electric and Steam (COGES) system for all ship power, including propulsion. Participating in the MOU signing were Youngsung Global CEO Bumsu Ku, DINTEC Director Hunsoo Ha, Korea LPG Industry Association Chairman Joonseok Hong, GE Aviation MSO Korea Leader Kirby Luke, Far East Ship Design & Engineering Co (FESDEC) CEO Jungkang In, and Cryos CEO Daesung Kim.
AIDAprima Christened in Hamburg
Carnival Corporation & plc officially welcomed its fleet’s newest ship with the christening of AIDAprima, now the flagship vessel for Carnival’s German-based brand AIDA Cruises. AIDAprima made its debut with a light show and naming ceremony witnessed in person by 1.6 million visitors at the 827th Hamburg Port Anniversary. AIDAprima launched as the corporation’s most environmentally friendly ship, equipped with a dual-fuel engine that can be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) while in port and at sea.
Cavotec, ABB Partner on Shore-to-ship Power
Cavotec and ABB have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly offer complete shore-to-ship power solutions globally. Such solutions allow vessels to plug into onshore power supply and shut down their engines, eliminating noxious emissions, noise and vibrations while berthed in ports that are often located in city surrounds. The technology ensures a seamless switch from on-board generation to shore power supply, without disruption of services including lighting, heating and refrigeration.
ABB Breathes New Life into Canadian Icebreaker
ABB will modernize a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker, installing the latest hardware and software onboard the 38 year old Pierre Radisson. As part of the complete upgrade to the ship’s power distribution system, eight new drives will also be installed. The contract includes the option to modernize the other two Coast Guard ships, Des Groseilliers and Amundsen, both of which have clocked up more than 30 years of service. By attaching sensors to onboard equipment, ABB’s expert engineers can help diagnose problems on the vessel from shore.

Fairbanks Morse Engine (FME) announced it has been named the 2015 Lockheed Martin Missions Systems and Training Supplier of the year for Ship and Aviation Systems during its annual Supplier Summit, held in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. on March 10, 2016. The award honors FME for its product delivery and performance, technical support, and commitment to affordability, the company said. Wind/Solar Ship Power System Earns Patent
Eco Marine Power’s (EMP) Aquarius Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) System, a wind and solar power solution for ships, has been granted a patent in Japan, paving way for commercial production. The Aquarius MRE System is an integrated system of rigid sails, solar panels, energy storage modules and marine computer platforms that will enable ships to tap into renewable energy by harnessing the power provided by the wind and sun. The rigid sails that will be used by the Aquarius MRE System are based on EMP's EnergySail technology (Patent Pending).

Carnival Corporation & plc today announced that its Italian brand, Costa Cruises, has placed orders for two new cruise ships as part of an agreement with Meyer Werft to build four next-generation cruise ships with the largest guest capacity in the world. Rolls-Royce Power Package for USS Zumwalt
Rolls-Royce announced delivery of the twin fixed pitch propellers to Bath Iron Works for installation on the U.S. Navy’s most modern surface combatant, the future USS Zumwalt, the first ship of the DDG 1000 multi-mission destroyer class. The provision of the twin fixed pitch propellers marks the completion of the power and propulsion system delivery from Rolls-Royce, following the MT30 main turbine generator sets and the RR4500 auxiliary turbine generator sets, which have already been installed and tested.
Wärtsilä Cuts 600 Jobs, Cites Weak Market
Wärtsilä announced a realignment of its Ship Power business, now renamed Marine Solutions. The reorganization, triggered by “sluggish global marine market situation” will see the reduction of approximately 600 jobs across Wärtsilä Marine Solutions' global operations, of which some 160 will be in Finland. Wärtsilä says it hopes the realignment will bring annual savings of around €40 million, the effect of which is expected to gradually materialize beginning from the third quarter of 2015, and will take full effect by the end of 2016.
