Christening Ceremony for LPG Carrier
Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., a group company of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) based in Yokohama, held a christening ceremony on March 12th for a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier currently under construction for JX Ocean Co., Ltd. The new ship, named Future Ace, will be the twelfth of Mitsubishi Shipbuilding's latest third-generation, 83,000m3-class LPG carriers. In addition to increased energy-efficiency, the ship will have the capability to adapt flexibly to major LPG terminals worldwide, as well as specifications compatible with the new expanded Panama Canal.
MHI: LNG Carrier "Marvel Crane" Christened
Mitsubishi Shipbuilding held a christening ceremony on February 21 for the next-generation LNG (liquefied natural gas) carrier currently under construction for Mitsui & Co., Ltd.The new ship, named Marvel Crane, is a design that significantly improves both LNG carrying capacity and fuel performance due to the adoption of efficient hull structure and hybrid propulsion system. Completion is scheduled for March 2019, after which the Marvel Crane will be put into service, transporting LNG for the Cameron LNG Project in the U.S., in which Mitsui & Co.

MAN Power for Chinese Dredger
MAN Energy Solutions won the order to supply the engine for a new dredger in southern China. The MAN 9L48/60CR unit will power the newbuilding vessel currently under construction at Dongguan Xiandai Shipbuilding Co. for sister company, Dongguan Rundong Shipping Co., Ltd., which will produce sand for the local construction industry.The four-stroke 9L48/60CR engine is rated at 9,720 kW @ 514 rpm and features MAN Energy Solutions’ exhaust-gas turbocharging and two-stage charge-air cooling. It is designed for heavy-duty operation – even with fuel qualities down to HFO-700 cSt / 50°C.

MOL Adopts 'Common Rail Fuel Injection' System
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced that its group company, Mitsui O.S.K. Kinkai, Ltd. will use a main engine equipped with the MAN Diesel & Turbo SE (MDT)-developed “common rail fuel injection system” on a newbuilding vessel. Shop test of the main engine was completed on January 29 and the vessel is slated for launching in 2018. After launched, Mitsui O.S.K. Kinkai, MDT and Makita Corporation(President: Yu Makita; headquarters: Takamatsu-shi, Kagawa Prefecture)will continue testing the system with support from MOL while the vessel is in service.

All nine of CMA CGM’s new gas-fueled Ultra Large Containerships will be built to Bureau Veritas (BV) class rules and under BV newbuilding supervision. The two China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) shipyards that will be building the nine 22,000 TEU containerships, Jiangnan Changxing Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (Hudong Zhonghua) and Shanghai Jiangnan Changxing Heavy Industry Co., Ltd (SWS), signed the classification contract with BV senior management at a ceremony during Marintec 2017 in Shanghai.

Wärtsilä Scrubbers for New Japanese Bulk Carriers
Wärtsilä informs it has been contracted to supply exhaust gas cleaning systems for two new 56,000 DWT Handymax bulk carriers being built at Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in Japan for Tokyo based NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd. (NYK BP). The newbuilds will be the first vessels owned or chartered by NYK Group having exhaust gas cleaning systems installed. By fitting the scrubber systems, the ships will be compliant with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) SOx emissions regulations, which come into force in 2020.
ClassNK CMAXS for Two MOL Ships
ClassNK Consulting Service Co., Ltd. developed next-generation diagnostic monitoring system “ClassNK CMAXS” has been chosen by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) for installation on two more ships operated by the company. The system is now installed on a total of six MOL-operated ships. The two ships are installed with CMAXS e-GICSX, a system which monitors electrically controlled main engine supplied by Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., and CMAXS LC-A for auxiliary engines supplied by DAIHATSU DIESEL MFG. CO, LTD.
China’s Largest Box Ships Powered by ABB Turbochargers
ABB turbochargers are powering the main engines and auxiliary engines of the largest containership ever built in China, a 20,000 TEU vessel named COSCO Shipping Taurus, launched in June 2017. This first ship was built by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd (SWS) for delivery to COSCO Shipping Lines Co. Ltd, the world’s fourth largest container shipping company. A further ten vessels also for COSCO Shipping Lines will be applied with the same ABB turbocharger configuration. They will add to the company’s fleet of 311 containerships with a total capacity of 1.64 million TEU.
