Wärtsilä to Power Chinese Sand Pumping Vessel
The Wärtsilä Yuchai Engine Company Limited (WYEC), a joint venture company founded in 2013, has been contracted to supply two 16-cylinder Wärtsilä 32 engines for a large new sand pumping vessel. The ship is being built at the Dongguan Xiandai Shipbuilding yard for a private Chinese operator, and the order with WYEC was placed in September. The ship will operate on both heavy fuel oil (HFO) and marine diesel oil (MDO). The Wärtsilä engines will be the largest ever to be installed in this type of ship in China, which will enable the company to extend its operations into deeper waters.

Philippines government is looking into forming a submarine force to strengthen maritime defense amid China's expansive claims over the South China Sea. President Benigno Aquino III said his country will invest in its first-ever submarine fleet to help protect its territory. Rolls-Royce to Power Zhuhai Ferries
Rolls-Royce has been selected to supply waterjets and high speed MTU diesel engines to power two new aluminium catamaran fast ferries for Chinese ferry operator Zhuhai High-Speed Passenger Ferry Co Ltd. The ferries will be some of the first to feature the highly efficient Rolls-Royce Steel S71-4 waterjets signifying the company’s growing presence in the marine market of South China. Wärtsilä Engines for Cutter Dredgers
One of the world's largest non self-propelled cutter dredger vessels, which is also one of the largest of all cutter dredgers in the world with 5200 kW of cutter power, will feature Wärtsilä engines, both to generate power and to drive the dredging pump. The ship has been designed by the Design & Research Institute of Ship and Ocean Engineering at Shanghai Jiaotong University, and is being built for Jiangsu Haihong Construction Engineering Co. at the company's yard in China. The order with Wärtsilä was placed in December, 2014.
Floating Production Systems: A Big Opportunity for Shipyards
Since the beginning of this year, orders have been placed for 17 floating production systems. The combined value of the fabrication contracts exceeds $16 billion. By year end there will likely be another five to eight contracts awarded and the overall contract value for the year will exceed $20 billion. Stated in terms of conventional ships, fabrication of floating production systems in 2013 will equate to orders for 220 VLCCs, 360 Suezmax tankers or 800 Panamax bulk carriers. In other words, it is a big market. Yet relatively few shipbuilders are active in this sector.
New Unmanned Surface Vessel Takes Shape off Singapore
Zycraft Pte. Ltd. (Zycraft) hsaid it completed Phase 1 development of the Vigilant Class Independent Unmanned Surface Vessel. A lead vessel named the LongRunner has already completed over 24 months of inwater testing in Singapore waters and traveled a total of 2000 nautical miles. During this period, the vessel also participated in several Fleet Battle Experiments and demonstrated continuous unmanned operations exceeding 48 hours and traveled 100 nautical miles into the South China Sea.
China Mega-Bridge Coatings Contract Awarded
COSCO Kansai Paint & Chemicals win the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Authority’s coatings contract for the 38-km long Pearl River estuary bridge. The vast bridge in the South China Sea will form a fixed crossing over the Pearl River Estuary between Zhuhai and Macau on the western side and Hong Kong on the eastern side. The 29.6km main section is in Zhuhai waters and comprises 22.8km of bridge work including three cablestayed bridges with spans ranging from 280m to 460m, viaducts spanning 75m and 110m, a 6km tunnel and two artificial islands.
China Shipyard Gets Rescue Boat Contracts
Afai Southern Shipyard awarded contracts to build 4 coastal fast rescue vessels for a Chinese Government agency. The contracts were signed between Afai and the Salvage Bureau of Ministry of Transport in the South China port city of Guangzhou. Afai has successfully delivered three of this type of coastal fast rescue vessels in the past, and at present three others are presently under construction in the yard. These fast rescue boats are full aluminum wave-piercing catamarans, with an overall length of 49.9m, a beam of 13.1m, and a depth of 4.5m, propelled by twin engines and twin water jets.
Hong Kong Plans Ship Exhaust Gas Emissions Law
Ship onshore power alternative provision to take several years, but clean fuel requirement by 2014. It will take several years for the government to introduce onshore electricity power facilities at the Kai Tak cruise terminal but a law requiring ocean-going vessels berthing at the city to use cleaner fuel can be in place next year at the earliest, reports the South China Morning Post. According to the think tank Civic Exchange, vessels visiting Ocean Terminal emitted 252 tonnes of sulphur dioxide in 2007 - comparable to the 286 tonnes of vehicle emissions in Hong Kong in 2010.

Giant Container Ship Christened
The 'CMA CGM MARCO POLO' (16 000 TEU) christened at the Zeebrugge Container Terminal in Belgium during maiden European voyage. The ceremony was performed by 'Godmother', Mrs. Naila Saadé, President of the CMA CGM Corporate Foundation and wife of Mr. Jacques R. Saadé, CMA CGM Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. The new 16 000 TEU vessel, owned by CMA CGM, sails under the UK flag. Built by DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering) in South Korea, the ship is 396 meters long, 54 meters wide, with a draft of 16 meters.

China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) signs agreement with Sansha Municipal Government to work on infrastructure energy & water resources. China's major ship-building conglomerate will start infrastructure, energy and water resources projects in Sansha, the country's southernmost city in the South China Sea, reports China Daily. The Sansha Municipal Government signed a package of cooperation agreements with China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, the state-owned conglomerate that engages in manufacturing and scientific research in a number of maritime industries.
China on Way to Economic Upgrade Says Maersk CEO
China's decline in exporting this year may be a consequence of it becoming a manufacturer of more sophisticated products. Soren Skou, CEO of Maersk Line, the container unit of the Danish shipping conglomerate AP Moller-Maersk Group, said that China's slowing trade growth suggests that the country "may have lost some of its competitiveness in some areas of the manufacturing sector", particularly in light industry, such as the production of toys, shoes and garments, as more companies have moved their manufacturing to neighboring Southeast Asian countries including Vietnam.
