Pure Watercraft Unveils Battery Pack

Pure Watercraft, manufacturer of the Pure Outboard electric motor, says it has launched "the most energy dense battery pack available in marine propulsion".The Seattle-based company says its new battery pack has a capacity of 8.85 kWh (47 percent more capacity than the previous model) and active thermal management, enabling faster planing, longer range, and extended operation at top speed.The new battery pack, which matches that of the best electric cars, was designed in-house, using lithium-ion cells from Panasonic.

Dynamic Positioning Key to Gulf Offshore Risk Management

There are a number of DP-equipped vessels currently in operation in the Gulf, with the majority of new build deep water vessels opting to fit DP during the construction phase. This increasing use of DP means that there is growing demand for highly qualified personnel, at a time when many existing operators are in full time employment and the numbers of those newly-qualified are still learning the trade, leaving employers struggling to adhere to stringent operational safety standards.

Obituary: Michael Jean Markey

Michael Jean Markey died peacefully at Swedish Hospital on March 2, 2013. Mike was born in Seattle, Wash., in 1932. He graduated from West Seattle High School in June 1950, and he received a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from Stanford University in June 1954. In 1958, Mike joined his father, William C. Markey, at the family firm, Markey Machinery Company, Inc. in Seattle. MMCo was founded in 1907 by Mike's grandfather, Charles H. Markey. Mike was with the company until his retirement in 1996.

Researchers Say Wind Enough to Satisfy World Power Demands

Researchers used a sophisticated climate model to show wind can meet many times the world's total power demand by 2030. Blessey Marine: Rollin’ On The River

The demand for handy sized towboats to handle inland river tows continues to grow and one of the strongest contributors to that growth is Blessey Marine. Primarily handling petroleum-related products, the firm has grown rapidly to their present fleet size of over 60 towboats with more on order. Although they have vessels ranging from 700 to 4900 HP, the 2000 HP Class is proving popular. Two recent deliveries illustrate slightly different sizes and configuration of their 2000 HP towboats. The MV Steve Scalise was built at the Verret Shipyard in Plaquemine, Louisiana to a design by the shipyard.

GMMOS Group Rebrands as Stanford Marine Group

UAE-based GMMOS Group has rebranded to Stanford Marine Group (SMG), according to a report on TradeArabia News Service. The group has two main divisions focused on the marine sector: Stanford Marine (OSV chartering) and Grandweld (shipbuilding and repair).
