WinGD Intros New Short-Stroke Engines

Switzerland-headquartered developer of low-speed gas and diesel engines for marine propulsion Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd (WinGD) has launched four new short-stroke engines to address economic engine speeds and accommodate space constraints on several vessel types.The engine designer said in a press note that the range, starting with the X52-S2.0 and X62-S2.0 and their dual-fuel counterparts X52DF-S1.0 and X62DF-S1.0, feature a short piston stroke that is ideal for vessels with a shallow draught, small propeller diameter or low main deck height.

Siemens is expanding its portfolio of green ship propulsion systems by adding a new member to the Siship BlueDrive Family: Siship BlueDrive Eco. Besides by integrating battery systems produced in-house, the company is now able to offer a scalable and flexible solution to cover every propulsion requirement, with different power graduations for small to medium-sized propulsion systems from 5 kilowatts (kW) in auxiliary mode up to 5.5 megawatts (MW) for the main drive – from Siship BlueDrive Eco through to Siship BlueDrive PlusC.

WinGD Names Heim CEO

Klaus Heim has been named chief executive officer of WinGD, a Switzerland headquartered developer of two-stroke gas and diesel engines for marine propulsion.Heim is slated to take up the role August 6, 2018, joining the company from OMT in Turin, Italy, where he currently serves as chief technical officer. He brings to WinGD more than 25 years of experience in the large engine industry, having held a variety of senior roles, including vice president technology two-stroke and vice president global research and development at Wärtsilä from 2004-2010.

World’s First High Temperature Accelerometer Unveiled

Kistler has introduced what it says is world’s first high temperature accelerometer for the monitoring of gas turbines. Designed for long-term use at up to 700° C, the piezoelectric sensor – made in Switzerland – is not pyroelectric and does not show any popcorn effect, offering manufacturers and operators of gas turbines new options for monitoring the combustion stability.The efficient and secure operation of gas turbines relies upon stable combustion processes. These have to comply with increasingly strict regulations, including flexible operation on different fuels and minimal emissions.

Caterpillar CFO to Retire in 2018

Caterpillar Inc. will begin its global, external search for a new chief financial officer after it announced that group president and CFO Brad Halverson has elected to retire in early 2018, concluding a career spanning more than three decades with the company. Halverson will continue working into early 2018 and will help ensure a smooth transition for the new CFO. Prior to becoming CFO, Halverson served two years as vice president of the Finance Services Division, and before that position, he was the corporate controller. Halverson joined Caterpillar in 1988 as an accountant.

Wärtsilä Offloads its WinGD Stake to CSSC

In a prepared statement China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) and Wärtsilä announced that Wärtsilä transferred its 30% shareholding in Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd. (WinGD), headquartered in Winterthur, Switzerland, to CSSC, one of the largest shipping conglomerates in China. WinGD will continue as an independent, international company to develop and innovate its two-stroke low-speed marine engine portfolio serving merchant markets and customers worldwide. WinGD started the development of large internal combustion engines in 1898 under the “Sulzer” name.

First 100% Battery Powered Air Supported Vessel Launched

The result of a five-year-long EU project, the world’s fastest Air Supported Vessel (ASV), fully powered by lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS), has been launched at Latitude Yachts in Riga, Latvia. The new first of its kind vessel BB Green operates at a speed of 30 knots (56km/h) and holds up to 70 passengers plus bikes. It will initially be used for demonstration purposes across Europe. The ASV technology reduces water resistance by having the ship operate on an air cushion.

Zurich, Switzerland, March 14 2016 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, is launching a new Dynamic AC (DAC) concept that optimizes engine speed, leading to significant fuel savings. It joins a number of established ABB products, such as Azipod propulsion and the Onboard DC Grid, which maximize energy efficiency for vessel owners. For a large cruise ship, for example, up to 6 percent (or up to 2000 tons of fuel) of annual savings can be achieved by engine speed optimization.

Wärtsilä to Power Shell's 15 LNG Barges

A series of 15 inland waterway barges being built for Belgium based Plouvier Transport N.V., and which will be chartered by Shell Trading Rotterdam (Shell), are to be powered by Wärtsilä dual-fuel main engines. The barges will operate primarily on liquefied natural gas (LNG). Wärtsilä will also supply other propulsion equipment and its LNGPac fuel gas handling system. The ships’ hulls are under construction at the VEKA Shipyard CENTROMOST in Poland and outfitting will be carried out at VEKA Shipyard Werkendam. The contract with Wärtsilä was concluded in December.
