World’s First: Wärtsilä Hybrid Propulsion for Bulkers
The technology solutions provider for the marine and energy markets Wärtsilä has been selected to provide the complete system design and full equipment scope for two new 9300 DWT self-discharging bulk carriers featuring hybrid propulsion.The Finnish corporation announced that the ships will be the first of their kind to be fitted with a hybrid propulsion solution. They are being built for Norway’s Aasen Shipping at the Royal Bodewes shipyard in the Netherlands. The yard has also designed the vessels.
CAT: New Solutions for EU Inland Vessels
Caterpillar Marine announced the development of new technology solutions for European Union (EU) inland waterway (IWW) vessels. The solutions are designed to comply with the next generation of regulatory emissions required for EU IWW applications and will be available starting in 2020 for various power ranges: for engines with less than 130 bkW, 130 to 300 bkW, and 300 to 1350 bkW.

Royston Expands UK Engineering Facilities
Royston Diesel Power has doubled the size of its UK engineering facilities to support continuing global growth in its marine engine service business and new technology development. As part of a £500,000 ($676,000) investment program the company has opened an additional 15,000 sq. ft. of engineering workshop premises alongside its existing headquarters on the banks of the River Tyne. As well as increasing the company’s engine repair and maintenance capability, the new center will also provide a focus for a range of other technical support functions.
Industry Task Force Pushes for Decarbonization Urgency

New Fuel Regs Drive Scrubber Business
The Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Association and its members are preparing to meet higher demand for gas scrubbing systems to bring SOx emissions in line with the targets set by the IMO’s 2020 fuel sulfur content proposals. As previously reported by this correspondent in Maritime Reporter and Engineering News (December 2016 issue, page 24; January 2017 issue, page 28), the IMO has come in for some severe criticism over its proposals to introduce a global marine fuels sulfur content cap of 0.5 percent (mass/mass) by the year 2020.
Denmark Studies Autonomous Shipping
In the future, autonomous ships may have a central role to play in Denmark. A pre-analysis made by the Danish Technological University (DTU) and the Danish Maritime Authority points to the need to develop technological solutions. As the entire transport sector vigorously strives to develop autonomous solutions, many developments have come a long way, especially for cars and trucks. The shipping industry too will see more new autonomous technology solutions, just as drone technology will become more widespread.
ABB to Power Emission-free Electric Ferries
ABB informs it will supply the complete power and propulsion systems for two HH Ferries Group vessels to become the world´s largest emission-free electric ferries. The modernizations utilize turnkey ABB solutions including batteries, an energy storage control system and Onboard DC Grid technology. At both ends of the route ABB will supply the first automated shore-side charging stations using an ABB industrial robot, to optimize the connection time and therefore maximize the charging period.
VEKA Orders Steering Systems for 15 Newbuilds
Last week contracts were signed at the VEKA head office in Werkendam by Stefhan van den Hil from VEKA Group bv (right) and Leo van Zon, Van der Velden Marine Systems B.V. (left). VEKA Group has signed contracts with Van der Velden Marine Systems for 15 complete maneuvering systems consisting of an integrated alarm and control steering panel, hydraulics, steering gear and high lift rudders. The installations are required for newly designed inland tankers from the “RPG” series as ordered by the Belgium based Plouvier Transport N.V. and her daughter company Intership AG.
First LNG Bunkering of OSV in North America
Harvey Gulf International Marine, LLC reported that its dual fuel offshore support vessel (OSV) M/V Harvey Energy has today bunkered LNG as a marine fuel. The news makes Harvey Gulf the first North American owner/operator of a dual fuel OSV to bunker LNG as a marine fuel, as well as the first to complete a truck to vessel transfer of LNG. The bunkering took place at a shore-based terminal owned by a subsidiary of Martin Midstream Partners L.P. in Pascagoula, Miss. Gas Turbine-Powered LNG Carrier Joint Design Announced
GE Marine, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company (DSIC) and Lloyd’s Register announce they have jointly developed a design for a gas turbine-powered LNG carrier. This unique carrier will provide low life cycle cost, high environmental performance and flexible design. The initial LNG carrier design will be built around a GE gas turbine-based COGES (COmbined Gas turbine Electric and Steam) system that will feature one 25-megawatt gas turbine, one steam turbine generator-set and two dual-fuel diesel generator-sets for low power operation and backup.
GE to Unveil 'Ecomagination' Marine Diesel at IWS
At the International Workboat Show, GE Marine will unveil its ecomagination-qualified 12-cylinder V250 Marine Diesel engine that reduces emissions by 50 percent to meet EPA Tier 4i and IMO Tier III emission compliance. GE’s breakthrough technology eliminates the need for a urea-based after-treatment emissions reduction system. In addition, the 12V250 engine offers increased power of 3,150 kW at 900 rpm and 3,500 kW at 1000 rpm while maintaining low life-cycle cost, reliability and fuel efficiency.
