MAN to Deliver Propulsion for Pasha’s LNG Containerships

MAN Energy Solutions said it has won an order to provide the propulsion systems for two new liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueled containership newbuildings, which will join the fleet of Pasha Hawaii, the U.S. Jones Act carrier in the Hawaii trade lane.Each system will comprise a 7S80ME-GI Mk 9.5 main engine, three MAN 6L35/44DF GenSets and an MAN Alpha FPP propeller system. LNG is the Bridge to ‘Zero Emissions’ Shipping

The advent of industry wide tightening of allowable sulfur emissions is getting nearer. Suddenly, with the deadline now little more than one year away, the countdown clock will very soon be ticking much louder. Simply stated, the cap on allowable sulfur content in marine fuels, presently at 3.5 percent in many geographical regions, will be reduced to 0.5 percent in January 2020. New Bunker Supplier Eyes Houston/Galveston Market

GCC Bunkers said it seeks to establish itself as a leader in developing compliance solutions for the IMO global sulfur cap in 2020 and is operated by principals Mark VandeVoorde and John Mafrige. Longer term, GCC is actively evaluating several processing or manufacturing opportunities for post 2020 bunker fuels to be produced in Texas. The Company has secured working capital funding from a Texas-based private equity group and has entered into agreements for physical marine fuels storage at Texas International Terminals in Galveston, beginning July, 2017.

New Push Boat Delivered to Devall Towing

The newly built M/V Jackson Scott has been delivered to owner Devall Towing and Boat Service of Hackberry, La. The Jackson Scott is a 64’ X 27’ inland push boat, powered by two fully mechanical, EPA Tier 3 engines rated 630HP @ 1,600RPM. The engines are coupled to Twin Disc MG 5222 transmissions turning four-blade 70” X 56” propellers. The M/V Jackson Scott follows four previous Devall Towboats with the same propulsion package from Laborde Products. Earlier vessels included the M/V Tug Devall, M/V Cooper Devall, M/V Aidan Devall and M/V Finili Ryanne.

US Navy: Bigger is Better, but at What Cost?

The U.S. Navy has a balanced fleet, but it wants to grow bigger and better. Will the budget allow both? Maritime Reporter's March 2017 cover story on the U.S. Navy was all about the numbers. There exists several plans to grow the fleet beyond the current number of 308 ships, the Mitre recommendation of 414 ships, the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessment 340-ship proposal, and the Navy’s decision to grow the fleet to 355 ships, and the Trump administration’s 350. With so many numbers being bandied about, there are even more suggestions on how to get there.

Knutsen Orders Four ME-GI Engines

Norwegian operator Knutsen OAS Shipping has ordered four MAN B&W 5G70ME-GI engines with EGR systems in connection with the construction of two 180,000 m3 liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker newbuildings. Upon delivery in 2020, the vessels will transport cargoes worldwide for two Spanish utility companies. According to the engine’s manufacturer MAN Diesel & Turbo, the order follows the increasingly popular path initiated by Gas Natural Fenosa, the multinational Spanish group that was the pioneer in adopting ME-GI technology in an order for four LNG tankers in 2013.

The U.S. Navy’s 10th Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) USS Gabrielle Giffords was commissioned at the Port of Galveston, Texas, on Saturday, June 10, becoming the 16th ship to be named for a woman and only the 13th ship to be named for a living person since 1850. Thustmaster Expands Its Waterjets Team

Marine propulsion and thrusters manufacturer Thrustmaster of Texas announced that Leonard Hill and Jason Hill have joined its waterjet team, bringing with them more than 65 years of experience in waterjet design, manufacturing and sales. Leonard Hill began his waterjet career at Jacuzzi Brothers waterjet division in 1978, and in 1984 purchased the waterjet product line from Jacuzzi to start North American Marine Jet (NAMJet). Mercury Marine Donates Boats, Engines to Harvey Relief Effort

Mercury Marine, in an effort to help in the recovery mission in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, said it has donated multiple boats and engines to the affected areas. This week, Mercury deployed 30, 6hp outboard engines as well as 10 inflatable boats to be sent to the command center in Texas. In addition, the company donated a 40hp outboard engine to Boots on the Ground, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering veterans and qualified civilians to provide in-field emergency and primary medical care. The state command center in Texas has also identified the scarcity of life jackets.

MAN Diesel & Turbo Planning for New North American HQ

The business park at Twinwood, a new west Houston destination for companies dedicated to research and development, distribution and light manufacturing, has finalized its first agreement to bring MAN Diesel & Turbo’s new North America headquarters to the 650-acre property. Located just south of I-10 between Woods Road and FM 1489, the business park at Twinwood is part of a proposed, 14,000-acre master-planned community of low, medium and high-density residential along with retail, hospitality, higher education and office. The property is owned by Houston businessman Putera Sampoerna.

A luffing and trolley travel hoist for bagged material used by two vessel loaders at Lake Charles, Louisiana. The hoists are fitted with Dellner SKP service brakes with mounting stands installed between the hoist motors and the reduction gears. The brakes were also manufactured with extra protection to prevent corrosion from sea water.
