Inland Workboats Have Much to Gain from Diesel Electric Propulsion

Diesel electric technology, as part of a comprehensive engineering design process, should be considered by the inland towboat sector. Diesel electric propulsion is not a new concept. Like azimuthing drives, its application to the inland marine market has lagged behind other areas of the marine industry. Diesel electric has gained traction in industries where fuel economy and redundancy of propulsion systems for safety is paramount. In particular, vessels like passenger ferries and offshore supply vessels have enjoyed the benefits of the diesel electric systems.

Pittsburgh Coalition Receives Marine Air Quality Grant

Cutting-edge Demonstration Project on the Rivers. The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI) is proud to be participating with Pittsburgh Region Clean Cities (PRCC) and Clean Fuels Clean Rivers (CFCR) to conduct a marine air quality study centered on the conversion of an inland towboat to dual fuel diesel/liquid natural gas (LNG) to reduce diesel emissions in marine vessels. The Maritime Administration (MARAD) Maritime Environmental and Technical Assistance Program (META) grant awarded to…

High Tech Towboat: LNG-Powered Design Gets ABS Approval in Principle

Conrad Shipyard and The Shearer Group, Inc. (TSGI) said that its design of a 4,200 horsepower LNG-powered towboat received “Approval in Principle” (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). The boat is based on TSGI’s azimuth drive (Z-drive) towboat design that debuted in 2008 as the FRANK T. STEGBAUER. To date, eight of these towboats have been built for Southern Towing Company, which is a pioneer in the use of z-drives for brown water operations. The boats have shown significant fuel savings relative to conventional towboats.
