Will Customers Redefine Design and the Science of Marine Propulsion?

It is “pre-COVID ” April of 2018, and 174 member states of IMO adopt a new strategy to reduce greenhouse gases from shipping. The meetings are considered “urgent” and the target is to reduce carbon emissions in half by 2050. Prior to those “targets” shipping dealt with regulations to address SOx and NOx reductions. Most of which have resulted in limited success due to infrastructure problems and a consideration as a temporary fix.The technical world has responded with low sulfur fuels, LNG, and methanol to work towards the target.

As the global maritime community collectively is slowly pushed toward decarbonization, it is generally agreed that there is no ‘silver bullet’ technical solution and that progress will come in steps, led by public/private collaboration and funding.A recent development following that script is the awarding this week of federal funds to a Washington State team working to accelerate ferry technology, with the joint innovation project selected for funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration.

Shipping's Share of Global Carbon Emissions Increases

Carbon emissions from shipping rose in the six-year period to 2018 and accounted for 2.89% of the world’s CO2, a study released on Tuesday showed, amid growing pressure on the industry to bring levels down.About 90% of world trade is transported by sea and UN shipping agency - the IMO - aims to reduce the industry’s overall greenhouse gas emissions by 50% from 2008 levels by 2050.The report - the fourth in a series commissioned by the IMO - said shipping's share of global CO2 emissions increased to 2.89% in 2018 from 2.76% in 2012, when the last study period ended.CO2 emissions grew to 1,056 m

Chinese Study Examining Methanol as a Marine Fuel

The Methanol Institute (MI) has joined a study led by the China Waterborne Transportation Research Institute (CWTRI), the think tank of the Chinese Ministry of Transport, which will consider the technical and operational requirements for the use of methanol as a marine fuel. Stena Bulk Offering Biofuel as an Option

Shipping company Stena Bulk said Monday it is offering low-carbon biofuel as an option for its customers following trials of the cleaner but costlier fuel on board one of its tankers in April.Customers will have options ranging from 20% to 100% biofuels based on an offsetting program where the biofuel is used within the Stena Bulk fleet, Stena Bulk said. OXE Marine Delivers Its First 300hp Diesel Outboards

Sweden-based OXE Marine said it has delivered its first 300-horsepower diesel outboard engine after it commenced production of the new model in May. After passing rigorous quality tests, the first OXE300 units are now ready to be shipped to customers. The production of OXE300 will ramp up and move to new production facility in July.Designed, tested and produced in house by OXE Marine, the OXE300, derives its power from a three-liter six-cylinder bi-turbo automotive diesel engine.

Stena Bulk Presents Fuel-efficient Tanker Prototype

Swedish shipowner Stena Bulk unveiled a prototype of its next-generation environmentally friendly product and chemical tanker, the IMOFlexMAX, engineered to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 25% compared to typical modern product tankers.The vessel, designed by naval architects at Stena Bulk's sister company Stena Teknik, is a further development of the company's IMOIIMAX design currently in operation, but with several notable additions. The vessels will be equipped with Flettner rotors and solar panels to harvest energy from wind and sunlight.
