SCHOTTEL Secures NC Ferries Contract

SCHOTTEL said it has secured a contract to provide propulsion units for two new vehicle ferries ordered by North Carolina’s Department of Transportation, which operates the second largest state-run ferry system in the United States. Glosten Design for All-Electric Ferry First

Alabama's historic Gee's Bend Ferry recently entered service after being converted from geared-diesel to become the first zero-emission, electric-powered passenger/car ferry in the United States. Owned by the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and operated by HMS Ferries, the 15-vehicle/132-passenger ferry runs on the Alabama River between Camden and Boykin, AL."As a first-of-its-kind vessel in North America, the Gee's Bend Ferry will have impact far beyond the State boarders.

World-First: Hydrogen-powered Push Boat

A new vessel being built to operate along the Rhône river in France will be the world's first push boat to run entirely on hydrogen fuel cells.The newbuild for the France-based Sogestran Group subsidiary Compagnie Fluviale de Transport (CFT) is due for delivery in 2021 and will feature a fuel cell based power and propulsion solution from ABB through its role in FLAGSHIPS, the EU-funded initiative to deploy commercially operated zero-emission vessels for inland and short sea operations.

Voith Delivers First U.S.-Built VSP Units

The first two American-made Voith Schneider Propeller (VSP) units have been delivered and installed in the Rodanthe ferry.Rodanthe is a ferry to be operated by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and used in its service to the Outer Banks, a string of barrier islands between North Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean.“With the new VSP units installed, the Rodanthe will offer years of smooth, efficient service to the islands. By linking steering and propulsion together, the VSP allows for fast response and precision movement in even the roughest of waters.

LGP-Fuelled ME-LGIP to Power Chinese VLGC

MAN Scores OffShore Wind Reference

MAN Energy Solutions reported that it won an order to supply the engines for a new heavy-lift crane installation-vessel for Oslo-based OHT (Offshore Heavy Transport).In total, MAN ES will supply four MAN 12V32/44CR GenSets with a total output of 28,800 kW for the ship, which is being built at the shipyard of China Merchants Heavy Industry in Haimen/Nantong with delivery due in Q4, 2020. The order is for a single vessel, with options for three more.The Alfa Lift is a heavy installation crane vessel design with semi-submersible heavy transportation capabilities.

Marine Lube Market: $5.9B by 2024

Marine lubricants market, which was above $4 billion in 2016, is expected to surpass consumption of 3.5 million tons, to exceed $5.9 billion by 2024.Asia Pacific marine lubricants market will record an annual growth rate of 4% over the 2016-2023, according to a new research report by Global Market Insights.Surging development in marine infrastructure across this region will augment the product demand. World's First: Wartsila Intros Hybrid Retrofit

The Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has signed an agreement with the international shipping company Hagland Shipping AS for a hybrid retrofit installation.The project will take place onboard the ‘Hagland Captain’, a general cargo vessel owned by Hagland Shipping. It will be the first project of its kind ever in short-sea shipping applications. The agreement was signed in December 2018.The installation of a Wärtsilä battery hybrid propulsion solution will significantly enhance the ship’s environmental performance by reducing its emissions, fuel consumption, and noise.

MAN ES Invests in Hydrogen

MAN Energy Solutions is acquiring 40 percent of the shares of the electrolysis technology company H-TEC SYSTEMS. A contract confirming the partial acquisition was signed in Augsburg by Dr. Uwe Lauber, CEO of MAN Energy Solutions, and Ove Petersen and Heinrich Gärtner, executive managers of the GP JOULE Group. The contract also makes provisions for a majority or complete takeover of H-TEC SYSTEMS at a later date. The company will continue to be independently represented on the market with no change in the level of commitment to its customers.
