New Beam Trawler Delivered
Dutch shipbuilder Damen has delivered the first new beam trawler to take to the North Sea in 12 years.Over the last 10 months, Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam (Maaskant) has outfitted the 41-meter hull from stock. The vessel, designated UK 46, is for Hakvoort Brothers, based in Urk, the Netherlands. According to the builder, a key feature of the vessel is the installation of twin Optima nozzles manufactured by Damen Marine Components (DMC). This is the first time that Maaskant has installed these in a fishing boat.The nozzles are Damen Optima L/D 0.4 models with a diameter of 3.63 meters.

Rolls-Royce to Equip ECO’s New Tugs
Rolls-Royce has signed a contract with Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO) worth more than $41 million to deliver propulsion and deck machinery for 13 new tugs, including five which will have a direct bollard pull of around 150 metric tons. The 13 tugs are being designed and built at Chouest-affiliated shipyards in the U.S. with support from Damen’s Technical Cooperation program. The five most powerful tugs will be 45 meters long and 17 meters wide, making them the world’s largest of their kind to date.

Rolls-Royce to Equip Five New Cruise Ships
Rolls-Royce has announced a new deal to provide propulsion and deck machinery to five cruise ships being built by Fincantieri at their Monfalcone and Ancona Shipyards in Italy. The firm orders are to supply a Promas system, deck machinery and steering gear to two vessels being built for Viking Ocean Cruises. The contract also covers steering gear and deck machinery for a further vessel under construction for Regent Seven Seas Cruises. Steering gear is also being provided for two vessels being built for Princess.

In July, Marquette Transportation Co. took delivery of a new 2,000-hp Z-drive towboat from Master Marine, Inc., Bayou La Batre, Ala. Jensen Debuts New Tractor Tug Design
Crowley Maritime Corp.’s Seattle-based naval architecture and engineering firm, Jensen Maritime, reports it has designed a new tractor tug for Vessel Chartering LLC that features some of the first Tier IV engines meeting higher federal air emissions standards among U.S. tugboats. The multipurpose tractor tug, engineered to support ship escorts, assists and towing, was jointly developed by Vessel Chartering LLC and Jensen and is being built by JT Marine of Vancouver, Wash. Wei-Li Crane Ship Departs Damen Shiprepair
The Wei-Li crane ship slipped her lines at Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque on Friday, September 11, to make the short trip up to Rotterdam after 10 days of maintenance and repairs. The 141-meter, 18,330 DWT crane ship required special dock bed arrangements, not least because of the 3,000-metric-ton crane mounted on her stern and her unconventional hull form. A total of 225 blocks were required, along with an additional 56 steel pillars of up to 7 meters in length to support the stern.
Certification of Tidal Turbines and Arrays
The new service specification DNVGL-SE-0163 Certification of tidal turbines and arrays is being published along with a new technical standard for DNVGL-ST-0164 Tidal turbines. Although the service specification is a new document it is built on the foundations of DNV-OSS-312 Certification of Tidal and Wave Energy Converters and the GL Guideline for the Certification of Ocean Energy Converters. Those two legacy documents have been important elements in the development of the tidal industry up to date but the industry needs have changed as it matures.

Azipod Retrofit for Mega-crane Vessel
Power and automation technology group ABB will supply the entire electric system to provide power throughout the vessel and five Azipod propulsion units for the 175-meter long Chinese mega-crane vessel, Hua Tian Long. It has a gross tonnage of approximately 42,500 and is one of the largest salvage vessels in Asia. The new retractable Azipod units, installed on a vessel for the first time, will bring a range of additional benefits, including entering shallow harbors and dry-docking without need of thruster removal.
